The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre in Scotland is home to Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer, with around 150 reindeer roaming the stunning Cairngorm Mountains and Glenlivet Estate. Visitors can enjoy close encounters with these gentle creatures in a unique and natural setting. This special experience offers a chance to learn about and see reindeer throughout the year, not just at Christmas.
The main attractions include guided Hill Trips, where guests walk through beautiful mountain scenery to meet the herd, and Paddock visits in Glenmore for those who prefer a simpler option. During Hill Trips, visitors can get within a metre of the reindeer, enjoy a short hand-feeding session, and take photos while learning from knowledgeable herders. The Paddocks offer an easy, accessible way to view reindeer up close without trekking into the hills.
Hill Trip tickets cost £25 for adults, £18 for children aged 3–16, and £22 for seniors/students, while under 2s go free. Paddock visits are around £2.50–£3 per person.
A visit to the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre is an unforgettable outdoor experience, offering the rare chance to meet free-ranging reindeer in their natural habitat. The mix of scenic beauty, fresh air, and fascinating wildlife makes it perfect for families, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a unique day out. The combination of adventure and education ensures it’s a must-visit in the Highlands.
Hill Trip: Hill Trips begin with a short drive along the main road, which you use your own vehicle for (small parking fee applies), followed by a guided 20-40 minute walk up to the reindeer (dependent on time of year). Participants should be confident walking on rough terrain and have a good level of fitness. Once with the reindeer, you will be right in amongst the herd, within a metre of the reindeer, with plenty of information given by the herder and the opportunity to take photos. There is a short hand-feeding session, but we are otherwise hands-off with the reindeer – they don’t like being petted. The whole trip usually lasts around 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the reindeer and the weather!
Paddocks: Our lovely reindeer spend most of their lives up on the mountains and only visit the Paddock area down in Glenmore for a few days at a time. Please note that whilst you’ll be close to the reindeer, we are hands-off with them so don’t pat or hand-feed them in the Paddocks – just like us they do appreciate their personal space. Visiting the Paddocks is simply an opportunity for those unable to join us on the Hill Trips to keep it simple and see some of our beautiful reindeer!
