Chillerton Down and the land around Gatcombe village is a beautiful area of downland, farmed and wooded valleys hidden away in the middle of the Isle of Wight. It is partly owned by the National Trust and partly protected by National Trust covenants to preserve the beauty of the landscape.

While many people head for the beautiful and dramatic coast you can include this area in some lovely walks particularly between Newport and Shorwell. It's regarded as something of a beauty spot, with great views of the Island, and is arguably at its best in the spring, when the wildflowers turn the hillsides in to a sea of colour.
Challenging Chillerton Down walk: This challenging, circular walk takes you off the beaten track in the middle of the Isle of Wight, passing through woods and valleys, and across the Chillerton Downs with distant sea views to enjoy.

Dogs allowed: Dogs are welcome across the downs. Please keep your dog on a short lead around livestock and under close control at all other times.

By road: Chillerton lies on a fairly quiet road between Chale and Carisbrooke. The Downs are to the south west of the village.
On foot: There are many footpaths on the Isle of Wight: consult Ordnance Survey Landranger Map 196 or OS Explorer OL29. The Worsley Trail crosses Chillerton Down and the Shepherd's Trail passes within half a mile (1km).
By bus: Southern Vectis bus service between Newport and Ventnor runs every 2-3 hours during the daytime and passes through Chillerton village. The closest bus stop to the Downs is just after leaving the southern edge of the village.
Cycling: Chillerton lies on a fairly quiet road between Chale and Carisbrooke.
Car park: Off-road parking by start of bridleway leading from Berry Shute.
