Curious About Bath Spa offers a self-guided walking tour experience that helps visitors explore the history, culture, and beauty of Bath Spa in a fun and interactive way. It combines sightseeing with a treasure-hunt style challenge, making it perfect for families, friends, and visitors of all ages. The experience is relaxed, flexible, and designed to let you explore the city at your own pace.

The activity includes two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt through Bath Spa city centre. The routes cover famous locations including Bath Abbey, ancient Roman baths, Queen Square, the River Avon, Royal Victoria Park, The Circus, Assembly Rooms, and the Royal Crescent, with 21 clues on Walk 1 and 14 clues on Walk 2. Both walks start and finish in the city centre and include detailed directions, maps, historical stories, and clues, making it suitable for children aged 6+ and wheelchair users.

The Curious About Bath Spa booklet costs £7.49, which includes both walks and the full treasure hunt experience. This single booklet price covers the whole group taking part together.

Features

  • An exploration of Bath Spa's city centre with two self-guided heritage walks with an optional treasure hunt. Completing the treasure hunt keeps everyone actively engaged, and urges you to look up, down and every which-way - so you won't miss out on any of the city's treasures.
  • Most clues are chosen for their historical value, so you'll learn about the diverse culture, significant people and extraordinary events which have influenced Bath Spa in becoming what it is today. This is an outdoor, unsupervised activity - so you can go at a pace which suits you, whilst keeping you healthy!
  • A Curious About walk is a fun and social activity for all the family and friends. Different people can take on different roles - follow the map, identify picture clues, read directions, etc - it's ideal for children from the age of 6, and if you can walk/wheelchair it, you're young enough!
  • The two walks have been designed so that the second one follows on from where the first one ends. Do both, or have a breather and do the second one another day! They both start and finish in the heart of the city - so buses, trains and car parks are easily available to get you there and back.

What to see

  1. Bath Abbey to Queen Square - 1.5 miles / 2.4 kms: From the spectacular Bath Abbey, the last of the great medieval churches of England, you make your way past ancient Roman baths and one of the oldest almshouses in the country. Next make your way through picturesque and distinctive streets with yet more baths, to the gorgeous River Avon and stunning views of the Abbey. Cross a timeworn bridge, pass colourful shops and an historic theatre, before ending your walk at a delightful Square for a well-earned rest.
  2. Queen Square to Royal Crescent - 1 mile / 1.6 kms: Circle the Square with its deep history, flirt with a glimpse of the fabulous Royal Victoria Park, explore unique streets, visit the most noble and elegant Assembly Rooms, once at the heart of fashionable Georgian society, navigate The Circus with its inspiring buildings and grand trees, before finishing your walk at Royal Crescent, one of the finest achievements of 18th century urban architecture.
