Epping Forest District Museum, we tell the story of the people and events that shaped the Epping Forest District of southwest Essex. Explore our fascinating collection including paintings, jewellery, costumes, a woolly mammoth tusk, “King Harold’s battle axe” and the Waltham Abbey Bible. 

See our changing exhibitions, galleries, gift shop and enjoy a variety of activities suitable for all ages. We also offer events and activities that take place at the museum and in the community. We are housed in a beautiful Grade II listed Tudor building dating from 1485 to 1603. The entire building is fully accessible and a lovely community space for all to use.

  • Collections: We have over 100,000 objects reflecting human life in the district. Objects range from prehistoric stone tools to 20th century computer games, and include costume, photographs, art, toys and domestic, industrial, and agricultural equipment. We also have a small ethnographic collection, oral history recordings and the Waltham Abbey Police Historical collection.   • Train: We are a 30-minute walk from Waltham Cross Railway Station. A taxi rank is located outside the station. Buses also operate from Waltham Cross Bus Station, which is a 5-minute walk from the train station.
  • Bus: Bus routes to Waltham Abbey run from Epping, Loughton, Harlow and Waltham Cross. The nearest bus stop to us is on Quaker Lane, by the Quaker Lane car park. The number 13, 66, 86 and 251 buses stop at this bus stop.
  • Car: From Crooked Mile Roundabout (from Harlow/Epping), continue down Crooked Mile, turn right at the traffic lights into Quaker Lane, follow it round to the left, then take the first right into Quaker Lane car park; walk through to Sun Street (by the white cottage) and turn right towards the library/museum.
  • Parking: Pay and display car parks are available nearby at Cornmill, Darby Drive, and Quaker Lane, with additional parking at Abbey Gardens car park approximately a 10-minute walk from the museum.
