  • Walking Tours: Explore the restricted areas of the historic Royal Gunpowder Mills as our knowledgeable guides take you on a 2.5 hour tour filled with stories and insights.   • Heritage: The Royal Gunpowder Mills is designated a Scheduled Monument, the highest protection that can be given to a historic site.  Its landscape is shaped by 300 years of making explosives and propellants, sealed off from the outside world and featuring a large number of listed buildings, waterways, dry canals and an alder tree plantation which supplied the wood to make the charcoal, one of the three ingredients of gunpowder. 
  • Exhibitions: In 2024, our exhibitions are open during Sundays at the Mills open days and have a range of fascinating displays about the history of our site and the technological innovations that happened here. Don't miss our Main Exhibition, full of interactive games and fun for all age groups!
  • Nature: The legacy of a derelict factory has created another secret world for wildlife in the north part of the site, with its historic waterways and old buildings in the alder woodland, each an ecological niche and collectively forming a unique nature reserve.  There is increasing interest in the Royal Gunpowder Mills as a wildlife habitat.  A large area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
  • Book Shop: The Royal Gunpowder Mills sells a selection of books about the history of the site.

Facilities

  • Parking: Coaches can park on-site (unless otherwise instructed) and can remain there for the duration of your stay, free of charge. For coaches parking on-site: go to the black automatic gates (to the right at the end of Beaulieu Drive) and use the intercom to be allowed on site. You will be directed to a suitable parking space upon arrival.
  • Food & Drinks: Please make sure all attendees bring their lunch and drinks with them as our cafe is not open during school visiting hours. Indoor and outdoor (weather permitting) lunch facilities will be available.
  • Dogs: Assistance dogs are welcome but currently other pets need to stay at home.

  • By Rail: Trains to  Waltham Cross and Theobalds Grove, connecting London Liverpool Street, Stratford or Tottenham Hale underground (Victoria Line) to/from Cheshunt / Broxbourne/Hertford East. We are a 25 minute walk east from Waltham Cross station. You can take a bus from outside the station. Turn right out of the station, go under the road bridge, up the stairs, turn left and you will see the bus stop just ahead.
  • By Underground: Loughton station (central line) - Bus 66 towards Debden. 
  • By Bus: Nearest bus stop is Highbridge Street Roundabout which is served by the following local buses: 14, 22, 22C, 66, 66A, 86, 211, 212, 251
  • By Cab: Less than £10 from Waltham Cross station.
  • By Road: From J25 of M25 go to Waltham Cross and then A121 to Waltham Abbey; or from J26 of M25, take A121, taking care to get into the right-hand lane when approaching the traffic junction at Meridian Way, and continue straight ahead into Beaulieu Drive.
