Farne Islands

Description

The Farne Islands are a National Nature Reserve located off the coast of Northumberland near Seahouses. Managed by the National Trust, the islands are internationally important for their seabird colonies and Atlantic grey seals. A short boat trip takes visitors to a spectacular wildlife haven filled with dramatic cliffs, historic sites and breathtaking coastal views.

During early summer, around 200,000 seabirds from 23 species breed here, including approximately 43,000 pairs of puffins, along with guillemots, razorbills, terns and shags. The islands are also a major pupping site for Atlantic grey seals, with over 2,000 pups born each autumn. Visitors can take sail-around boat tours for wildlife viewing or landing trips to Inner Farne (April–September), explore St Cuthbert’s Chapel, and see the iconic Longstone Lighthouse, once home to Grace Darling.

Landing fees for Inner Farne during off-peak months (April, August and September) cost £13.00 for adults, £6.50 for children aged 5–17, with under 5s free; family tickets are £32.50 for two adults and up to three children or £19.50 for one adult families. During peak season (May, June and July), prices are £17.00 for adults and £8.50 for children, with family tickets costing £42.50 for two adults or £25.50 for one adult families. National Trust members land for free, but a separate boat ticket fee applies.

The Farne Islands offer one of the best wildlife experiences in the UK, especially during puffin season. The mix of natural beauty, rich birdlife and historic landmarks makes every visit unique and memorable. For nature lovers and photographers, it is an unforgettable coastal adventure in Northumberland.
