Farne Islands
1.71 miles
Longstone Lighthouse stands on Longstone Rock in the rugged Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast. It is famous for the heroic rescue carried out in 1838 by lighthouse keeper William Darling and his daughter Grace Darling. This isolated lighthouse remains one of Britain’s most inspiring maritime landmarks.
Visitors reach the lighthouse by boat from Seahouses and can take part in the Longstone Tour, which includes approximately 30 minutes inside the lighthouse. You can see Grace Darling’s tiny bedroom, where she first spotted survivors of the Forfarshire shipwreck clinging to rocks during a fierce storm. The trip also includes a cruise around the Farne Islands with full commentary, offering views of seabird colonies and the famous grey seals.
Admission prices are £3.00 for adults, £2.00 for children (up to 16 years) and concessions, and £5.00 for a family ticket covering two adults and up to two children, with additional children charged at £1.00 each. Car parking is available at Seahouses, and sailings operate depending on weather and tide conditions.
With dramatic island scenery, fascinating history and abundant wildlife, Longstone Lighthouse offers a memorable coastal adventure. It’s an ideal trip for history lovers, nature enthusiasts and families looking to explore the Farne Islands.
