Family Activities and Events: The Museum is a great place for families to have fun together and learn about Florence Nightingale and her legacy. We host a wide variety of activities and events for families all year round.
History of the Collection: Florence Nightingale helped to set up the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’s Hosptial in 1860. Following the first intake of 15 ‘probationer’ trainee nurses, the school improved and expanded over the following decades, spreading Nightingale’s ideas of nurse training across the world. The school was overseen by the Matrons of St Thomas’s Hospital.
Our Collection Today: Since the museum opened in 1989, we have expanded the collection, adding new objects and knowledge to our catalogues. We have some of our most important objects on display in the museum, telling the story of Nightingale’s life. Inside the museum you can see objects, such as her pet owl, her dress and jewellery and some of the letters and books that she wrote throughout her lifetime.
Highlights of the Collection: Athena the Owl, The Register of Nurses Sent to the Military Hospitals in the East, Scutari Hospital Sash, Nightingale Training School Uniform, 1890s, Herbarium, Pencil and Wash Drawing of Florence Nightingale and Marianne Nicholson, Fanoos Lantern, Freedom of the City Certificate, Nightingale Training School Badge.
Exhibitions: Here at the Florence Nightingale Museum, we have an exciting exhibition programme, where we explore stories related to Nightingale’s work and how this has developed since her death, as well as those people who are continuing her legacy.

Parking: If travelling by car please be aware that the museum is located within the Congestion Charge Zone. We do not have our own designated parking, the nearest parking is St Thomas’ Hospital this is very limited parking and should be prioritised for patients of the hospital and those with limited mobility.
Toilets: The museum has male toilets, female toilets and an accessible toilet. Free period products are available. Both male and female toilets include baby change tables.
Assistance Animals: Working guide and assistance animals are welcome at the museum.
