Heatherslaw Light Railway is the most northerly steam railway in England, located on the Ford & Etal Estates. This fifteen-inch gauge railway runs between Heatherslaw and Etal Castle, covering a 6.4 km return journey through beautiful countryside. The ride follows the banks of the River Till and offers a charming steam train experience for visitors of all ages.
The journey takes 20–25 minutes each way, with scenic views of swans, heron, ducks and even the occasional otter. Visitors can watch the steam locomotive being turned on a turntable at Etal station before the return trip. Special experiences include the Steam Footplate Experience with locomotive “Bunty” and the Diesel Footplate Experience with “Binky”.
