The Hirsel Estate

, Coldstream, Northumberland, TD12 4LW, England
1-90 Years

Description

In 1611, the first Earl of Home contracted to buy the Hirsel Estate from Sir John Kerr – although it was not until 1621 that King James VI finally granted the lands of Hirsel to James, the 2nd Earl of Home.Much of the early tree planting and the existence of the earliest part of Hirsel House appear to have been built by about 1620. The Hirsel was also justifiably famous for its sport, particularly it’s salmon fishing on the river Tweed, where in 1743 the 8th Earl of Home caught a 69lb salmon on a 22’ rod and a horse hair line.By the mid 1700s the house and gardens had been significantly developed and the 9th Earl of Home embarked on a major programme of forestry and agricultural improvement.

What to see

Visitor Activities
The Estates have always actively encouraged “local people” from their Communities to enjoy both the Douglas and Hirsel Estates Policies on a relatively informal basis. However, in the early 1980s, Lady Caroline Douglas-Home (who was the Hirsel Estate Factor between 1959 & 1995) created the Homestead Craft Centre and Museum of Country Life and, as a result, the visitor activities began to evolve into a business entity of its own, with more formal way marked walks, a Museum, Tea Room, Craft Workshops as well as other occasional events (craft fairs, caravan rallies and scout camps).

Golf
The Douglas and Hirsel Estates have an interest in two very different, but equally charming golf courses - both of which will provide a challenge to test any level of golfer, and extend a very warm welcome to visitors throughout the year

Fishing
Fishing has always been an important part of Estate life - from 1743 when the Eighth Earl of Home caught a 69lb salmon (on a 22ft rod and a horse hair line) and whose dog (who was nearly as notorious) would catch and land fish at his masters feet, a hundred years later the Lord Home of the day caught an average of 14 salmon a day (to his own rod) for 6 consecutive days in June and almost 100 years after that Sir Alec, with two others, caught 64 fresh salmon in one February day.

Shooting
Both the Douglas and Hirsel Estates are renowned for the quality of their shooting (Douglas for grouse, hill partridges, and high pheasants, Hirsel for its wonderful pheasant shoot), the shooting and wildlife of both Estates were immortalised by Sir Alec Douglas-Home in his book "Border Reflections".
