Description

Hitchin Lavender is a beautiful family-run lavender farm located near Hitchin in the United Kingdom. Run by 6th generation farmers, it has been growing lavender for over 25 years in an area famous for lavender production for over 500 years. It is a seasonal countryside attraction where visitors can enjoy nature, pick flowers, and relax in stunning surroundings.

The Main Field covers over 30 acres of lavender and allows visitors to pick their own lavender with purchased picking bags. There is also a 2-acre Display Field with around 60 different varieties of lavender, a sunflower field where stems are charged individually, wildflower meadows, and a museum celebrating lavender’s history. Visitors can enjoy the Old Barn Tearoom, food trucks, gift shops, free parking, picnic areas in the Main Field, and see local wildlife including bees, butterflies, and birds.

The Old Barn (including the tearoom and farm shop), museum, and play area are always free to visit, while entry fees apply for the Main Lavender Field and pumpkin patch. Lavender season tickets (June to August) are around £7 on weekdays and £8.50 on weekends when booked in advance, and pumpkin season (mid to late October) costs £3 weekdays and £4 weekends.

With its sea of purple fields, golden sunflowers, and peaceful countryside views, Hitchin Lavender offers a perfect day out for families, couples, and photographers. It combines flower picking, history, food, and nature in one scenic location just 2 miles north of Hitchin. Whether you want beautiful photos, fresh lavender, or a relaxing outdoor experience, it is a charming and memorable place to visit.

Features

  • Lavender Fields: Our Main Field is home to over 30 acres of lavender, creating a sea of purple on a sunny hillside in summer. We are the largest lavender farm in the UK that allows visitors to pick lavender. It’s the perfect spot to get fabulous photos of you and your loved ones, to enjoy delicious treats, and to soak up the natural goodness that only lavender can provide! Just outside the Main Field, our 2-acre Display Field showcases around 60 different varieties of lavender.
  • Sunflower Field: The perfect complement to our purple blanket of lavender, our golden sunflower field is located on the right-hand side of the Main Field. Visitors are welcome to pick sunflowers – these are charged by the stem.
  • Wildflower Meadows: The Main Field currently has two dedicated areas for wildflowers – one at the top of the hill, and another part of our conservation area. The hundreds of wildflower varieties in these meadows are not only a treat for the eyes, they also provide food and shelter for many hundreds more insects, birds, and mammals.
  • Museum: Our museum pays homage to Hitchin’s long history of lavender growing, which dates back to the 1500s! Located next to the Old Barn, the museum takes you back into the world of the Victorian apothecary, informing visitors about the modern and ancient influences of lavender on our culture.
  • Old Barn Tearoom: Set within our historic 17th-century barn, this is the perfect place to pause after exploring the fields. Enjoy homemade cakes in the tearoom, let children play just outside, browse our main gift shop, and choose from a wide variety of lavender plants to take home.
  • Food Trucks in the Field: To keep you refreshed while enjoying everything the Main Field has to offer, a range of food outlets are available. The available outlets may vary depending on the time of day, but you will typically find ice cream, loaded fries, and a range of refreshing beverages to suit your needs!

Facilities

  • Parking: Free parking available.
  • Food & Drinks: We have a tearoom housed inside our beautiful 17th century barn, which offers a wide choice of hot and cold drinks, savoury snacks, light lunches, cakes and delicious ice creams.
  • Gift shops: Gift shops are available in both the Main Field and the Old Barn, stocking a range of own-brand products containing our own lavender alongside other locally sourced gifts.
  • Picnic: You are welcome to picnic in the Main Field, but not in the Display Field or in the vicinity of the Old Barn tearoom. If you are bringing a picnic to Hitchin Lavender, please ensure that you take your litter away with you when you leave. This is part of our effort to combat the increased volume of rubbish left in the lavenders, and to keep litter to a minimum in our countryside.
  • Toilets: We have toilet facilities in our Old Barn tearoom and a temporary block in the lavender field during the summer (not the autumn). Both toilets have baby changing facilities, but the Old Barn toilets are the only ones that have step-free access.
