The Museum of the Home, formerly the Geffrye Museum, is a free museum in the 18th-century Grade I-listed former almshouses on Kingsland Road in Hoxton, London. The museum's change of name was announced in 2019.

A place for visitors to consider the ways we have lived in the past and to explore new ways of living in and looking at the world today.

  • Gardens: Our Gardens Through Time show how city gardens were kept from the 1600s through to the present. The Kingsland Road Gardens are a place to relax, picnic, and enjoy green space in the heart of the crowded city.
  • Collections: Explore our unique collection of domestic life in person or online. From armchairs to vacuum cleaners and account books to wallpaper, our collection of over 40,000 objects offer a unique insight into the meaning of home.
  • Tours: Join experts including our visitor experience hosts on tours of our galleries, restored almshouse and the local area.

  • Mini Playhouse: A place to play, co-designed with local children.
  • Family trails: Two interactive trails by illustrator Emma Thrussell bring the Home Galleries and Gardens Through Time to life with characterful drawings.
  • Sensory Explorer Bags: Pick up a sensory explorer backpack from reception, filled with things to help make your visit enjoyable and calm. Leave a contact number to sign out.
  • Reading Lounge and sensory den: Our Reading Lounge is a safe space for children to play and families to rest. Read more on the page under Facilities.

  • Parking: There is no car park at the Museum. Local on-street parking is limited. 
  • Food & Drinks: You can’t eat and drink in our galleries (including the family area). But you are welcome to picnic on the Kingsland Road Gardens or use our Lunch Room.

  • By Train: The closest station to the main museum entrance is Hoxton (London Overground, Windrush Line), 10 metres from the main museum entrance. Hoxton Station has step-free access and London Overground staff are available to assist passengers during museum opening times. 
  • By Bus: The closest bus stops are on Kingsland Road. Buses 149, 242, 243 and 394 stop on Kingsland Road. 
  • By Bicycle: We have 8 bike racks on the Kingsland Road Gardens and there are Santander Cycle docking stations at Falkirk Street and Geffrye Street. We don’t allow folding bikes or e-scooters inside.
  • Parking: There is no car park at the Museum. Local on-street parking is limited.
