South Downs Planetarium experience the magic of the night sky in comfort. See stars and other celestial objects projected onto our dome together with live commentary by a professional astronomer. Pleased to state that we have received many visitors from organisations that specifically cater for young people and adults who have additional educational and learning requirements.

The South Downs Planetarium and Science center is a unique and convenient setting for all types of corporate or private events. Situated in the City of Chichester, close to Chichester railway station and the A27, makes the venue easily accessible. The site has car parking facilities, full disabled access and is in a quiet and peaceful setting.

Features

  • Outside Observing: Every year we hold several outside activities, providing an opportunity for members of the public to safely observe the sun using our solar telescopes or after dark observe the wonders of the night sky with our planetarium team.
  • Telescope Courses: Several time a year we hold half day Telescope courses for visitors wanting to learn how to choose and use their new telescope.
  • Astro Navigation: The Royal Navy training in the lecture theatre, we also provide learning experiences for other visitors and groups. This includes Astro Navigation for members of the Royal Navy and International Navies as part of their officer training.
  • Teacher training: Teacher training in the lecture theatre. We provide 'Teacher Training' courses for university students hoping to teach sciences at primary or secondary school level.

Facilities

  • Parking: There are two disabled car parking spaces adjacent to the main entrance of the Planetarium; additional parking spaces can be allocated accordingly if the need arises.
  • Toilets: The Planetarium has two easy access toilets, one of which is slightly larger so as to accommodate carers if this is necessary.

What to see

Events:

  • The Fantastic Northern Lights: Journey north to the lands within the Arctic Circle and see the amazing forms and colours of Nature’s great light show - the aurora borealis or 'Northern Lights'. Friday, 13th February, 7:30pm.
  • Stars on Frosty Winter Nights: Now that the nights are long and dark, the Winter Constellations of Orion, Taurus and the Pleiades establish themselves and dominate the Winter night skies. Sunday, 15th February, 3:30pm.
  • All Aboard - A Tour of the Planets: From hot little Mercury, closest planet to the Sun, past cloud-covered Venus, beautiful blue Earth strong and red Mars we head for the outer planets. Friday, 20th February at 1:30pm.
