The canal runs 4 miles from the Basin to the Harbour at Birdham and, today, the 2 miles as far as Donnington are navigable. This tranquil haven starts within easy walking distance from the railway station, bus terminus and city centre.

The canal has sections bounded by mature trees and also travels through open farm land with good views of the cathedral and South Downs. It is valued by local residents and holidaymakers who enjoy the many activities – narrow boat trips, rowing, canoeing, rambling, fishing, and cycling.  The tow path is a designated public footpath, now part of the extended Lipchis Way.

Prices starts from £10.00 for adult & £7.00 for Child(12 and under) for Scheduled boat trips. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

  • Boat Trips: Introducing our canal boats and the variety of trips you can take. The Trust has two canal boats, Kingfisher and Richmond, and offers both scheduled and charter trips throughout the year. The boats ply the two-mile section of the canal between the Basin and Donnington; a beautiful stretch with excellent views and prolific wildlife.  A lift is available on both boats for those who may not be able to manage steps.
  • Rowing boat hire: Rowing is fun and relaxing and a great way to spend a sunny afternoon or get some exhilarating exercise. A leisurely row from Chichester to Donnington and back will take about two hours. Every member of the family will enjoy the experience and be able to take a turn.
  • Canoeing, paddleboarding & small unpowered craft: Whether you are an individual, a club canoeist or paddleboarder or a family group, feel free to come along and try out the water. We offer day tickets and annual licences. The canal is ideal for novices and for basic training. The canal is a beautiful retreat close to the city and you can enjoy unique views of the cathedral and South Downs from the water. Enjoy the abundance of wild flowers and reeds beds, as you glide past, and watch out for herons and kingfishers in their natural habitat.
  • Walks: The towpath is a gentle 4 mile walk stretching from the Canal Basin in Chichester to Chichester Marina. Chichester Canal passes through 4 miles of open farmland from the Basin to Chichester Harbour at Birdham. The route takes you through a mixture of open farmland with benches available so you can rest, appreciate the tranquillity and admire an abundance of wildlife. Please note that dogs should be kept on a lead at all times and should be discouraged from entering the water. We must do all we can to protect wildlife.
  • Wildlife: Teeming with wildlife, if you keep your eyes open you will be richly rewarded. It is common to see waterfowl such as moorhens, coots, mallards, swans sharing the water with birds including the heron, kingfisher, whitethroat, common sandpiper, spotted flycatcher and woodpecker. A family of foxes lives in a field before the Selsey Tramway. You can often see them sunning themselves on a bright day.
  • Fishing: The stretch of Canal between the Basin and Donnington is popular for its coarse fishing and competitions are often held in the season. There is a closed season between 1 April and 30 September which applies to the section of the Canal between the Canal Basin and the A27 road bridge.
  • Model Boating: Chichester Model Boat Group has permission to sail their craft on the canal. If you wish to sail a model boat here, you must be a member of this group. Membership is free. The group meets on Sunday mornings at 10.30am at the Canal Basin. There is a limited amount of free parking and refreshments can be purchased from the cafe.
