The Alderney Railway, established in 1847, is the only working railway in the Channel Islands and serves as a volunteer-run heritage attraction. It travels a 2-mile coastal route from Braye Road to Mannez Lighthouse using historic 1959 London Underground carriages.
The line, originally built to transport stone for the breakwater, operates during summer weekends, bank holidays, and for special events like the Santa Special. Its original purpose was to bring stone from the quarries for the construction of the breakwater. For the next 130 years the railway carried the stone for the necessary programme of continuous repair.
