The Time Capsule and the Tiara - A Treasure Hunt in Bedford
- 30 years ago, during archaeological excavations of the castle grounds, an ancient time capsule was uncovered. This was reburied at an undisclosed location in Bedford for safekeeping. At the same time, a precious tiara of the finest diamonds was found at the castle but never made it to the archaeological finds box!
- Fast forward 30 years, and one of the archaeologists on the dig, 'Curious Clara', has finally admitted that whilst trying on the tiara, she sneaked a peek inside the time capsule. When she heard someone coming, she panicked, hid the tiara in the time capsule and quickly sealed it back up.
- Unfortunately, the only record of where the time capsule was reburied is a set of Clues and a map of possible locations. The Exploration Society needs help from TOP Adventurers (YOU!) to crack the Clues and pinpoint the location of the hidden capsule. Good luck!
Treasure Hunt Through Bedford - Parkland & Riverside
- Ace adventurers - we need your awesome treasure-seeking skills! Your self-guided treasure hunt Trail adventure will have you roaming around the ancient town, believed to be the resting place of an Anglo-Saxon king!
- Boldly cross parkland, trek beside the River Great Ouse and weave through the quaint streets of Bedford town, dodging booby traps and rival treasure seekers along the way. As you get closer and closer to the hidden hoard, you'll stumble across intriguing stories and fascinating facts about this pretty market town (and the crucial clues, of course!).
- There's more to this picturesque town than meets the eye… The archaeologist known as 'Curious Clara' has made a confession. During a dig at the castle grounds decades ago, a time capsule was uncovered at the same time as a number of jewels, including an ornate tiara.
- While trying on the tiara, Clara couldn't resist taking a peek inside the capsule, and when footsteps approached, she panicked and hid the tiara in the container! Both have long been reburied, but we require the jewels for our archaeological finds box. We need intrepid explorers (YOU!) to follow the clues and unearth the time capsule once again. Good luck!

Birthday Party Details
Want a birthday that’s actually fun (and doesn’t involve everyone just sitting around)? A Treasure Trail is an easy, ready-to-go adventure that gets people outside, exploring and laughing together. Our pre-written Trails are suitable for children and adults aged 6+, and work best in small teams of around 4–5 people. Everyone follows the route, cracks the clues, and solves the mystery as they go.
How a Treasure Trail birthday works
- Pick a location (choose somewhere local, or make it part of a day out).
- Split into teams (4–5 per team works best).
- Set the mission (a quick briefing + team names instantly boosts excitement).
- Start times (stagger teams by 2–5 minutes to avoid copying).
- Finish with prizes (more on that below!).
Children’s birthday parties: what to know
- We get asked a lot whether Trails work for children’s parties.
- Standard Trails are designed for ages 6+, but at that age they’re best enjoyed as a family group or mixed adult/child team, because the directions and clue-solving usually need grown-up support.
- If you’ve got 20 energetic 6-year-olds and one adult, a standard Trail probably isn’t the right fit.
- For older children (often 9/10+, depending on the group), small teams can work really well, but they’ll still need adult supervision, especially near roads and crossings.
Ready to plan your birthday Trail?
- Pick a location, choose your Trail, and you’re good to go.
- If you’d like help choosing a Trail that suits your group size, ages, and timings, get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Visit the website for more information.
You can start your Trail whenever you like, as they are completely self-guided. Everything you need to complete your Trail is in the booklet, including directions and clues to guide you along the route.
