Guildford High Junior School is a leading prep school for girls aged 4 to 18 (Gender - Girls )

The Junior School is a lively, happy place where girls blossom personally, intellectually and socially. Open any classroom door and you will find excited and engaged girls who are fascinated by the topics they are learning. The only way to truly experience what they can offer is to visit us and we hope to welcome you to the school soon.The Junior School is located next door to the Senior School. We share the Senior School’s outstanding facilities and Senior School staff teach our girls in some subjects. Girls receive a first class education and first class care from four years old until they leave us at eleven. They then progress naturally to our Senior School without an additional entrance exam.There are around 280 girls in the Junior School with two classes per year group. Families tend to live within a short drive or within walking distance of the school. We balance the pursuit of excellence with full participation. Everyone takes a full and active part in the school community, while individual talents are nurtured so that each girl develops her personal strengths and aptitudes.

Learning at GHS
The Junior School is a special place to learn. The girls thrive in the buzzy, creative school where no two days are the same; author visits, workshops, gym displays, music competitions, trips, drama and much more all exist alongside a packed curriculum. We aim to instil an enthusiasm for knowledge which will support and enhance their learning as they progress through school.In the Junior School girls study a broad and exciting curriculum of 14 fast-paced subjects. Subjects such as Science, Art, Music and Computer Science are timetabled every week and girls study a variety of languages including Mandarin, Spanish, French and German.

Creativity
A rich creative timetable puts creativity at the centre of Junior School life. Artwork adorns the walls, music fills the corridors and dramatic performances give all girls the opportunity to take to the stage in front of friends and family.

Sport for all
The ethos of excellence combined with full participation is clearly seen in the field of sport. Girls enjoy a variety of sports within their timetabled PE lessons and our outstanding sports facilities are also used to their full advantage for extracurricular sporting activities. They are incredibly proud of the results our girls achieve at both a county and national level in a wide variety of sports. Junior School pupils benefit from lessons with a number of dedicated sports staff, all of whom compete regularly in their preferred discipline.

Extra Curricular

Junior Clubs
The huge number of extracurricular clubs and activities offered in the Junior School add to the rich range of experiences for girls. When girls first join them in Reception, extracurricular clubs are kept to a minimum as unstructured play time is important at this age. As the girls get older the chances for fun, for enrichment and to acquire new skills increase.

Junior trips and visits
Frequent trips, visits and workshops add another dimension to the extracurricular programme; they are closely linked to the curriculum, enable an intensive programme to be followed and make a significant contribution to the girls’ social development. There is progression in duration and distance travelled.Girls go on frequent day trips from Reception but the first residential trip takes place in Year 2 where the girls go to a local field study centre for one night. Year 4 spend two nights on an outward bound residential trip and Year 6 travel to France for five days, using their linguistic skills and learning about the country’s culture.

Scholarships

SCHOLARSHIPS AT 11+
Academic scholarships are awarded based on entrance examination results and interviews. All candidates who sit the entrance examination on the main entrance assessment day are automatically considered for scholarship. Scholarships are available to internal and external candidates and can be worth up to 5% of fees.Auditions for the music scholarship take place shortly after the entrance examination and potential music scholars are expected to satisfy our usual academic requirements for entry. Candidates should normally have reached Grade 4-5 standard on their orchestral instrument and their playing should be of distinction quality.  It is expected that candidates should normally offer a second instrument. Awards can be worth up to 5% of fees.
