Avalon School is Independent Primary school in Wirral for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
Avalon School opened its doors to its first eight pupils in 1907. Based in a detached house in Townfield Road, West Kirby. the school was founded by three ladies, one of whom, Miss Ada Stephens, became the first Headmistress. As numbers increased, the school moved into larger premises in Grosvenor Road in 1925 and it was here that the school acquired the name “Avalon”, the phoenix badge and the motto “Est Nulla Clades”. In the 1990's the then Headmaster, Christopher Kirch decided to make Avalon completely co-educational. Before this, boys had left at the end of their nursery years. The school became a charitable trust with a board of governors in 2001. The years that followed saw further new building in the creation of the purpose built block for the younger nursery children and the new administration block and science laboratory. Avalon today draws proudly on its traditions and heritage whilst welcoming every opportunity for future growth and development.

Our emphasis is firmly on ensuring the children’s happiness, providing the safe and secure environment that they need to grow and prosper. The children explore and develop their curiosity and imagination to help them make sense of their world.
Infants
Children are welcomed into the Reception class at the start of the academic year in which they celebrate their fifth birthday. The Reception staff Miss Hardy and Miss Bennett encourage strong links with parents to ensure school is an extension of the home.In Reception, the principles that form the basis of your child’s education are to provide a happy, friendly and stimulating atmosphere where they can motivate and encourage your child in the learning process. By offering a wide range of activities we aim to discover and develop the particular strengths of each child and build upon their independence to explore all curriculum areas. Each child’s learning journey is very individual at this age as they develop at different stages over this year.
Juniors
Children enter the juniors (Key Stage 2) at age 7 into Year 3 and are immersed into a broad and balanced curriculum which aims to foster independence, creativity and self-confidence. Strong pastoral care, excellent pupil child relationships and strong academic values are at the heart of Avalon school. Children’s personal development is excellent, fulfilling the school’s aim to help pupils become the proud, confident and articulate young citizens of tomorrow.
SEN (Learning support)
All children have their own particular gifts and talents. Avalon School uses its small classes and friendly yet purposeful atmosphere to encourage all children to develop their individual strengths. Where children have been identified as having strong gifts or talents, academic work is differentiated to provide more challenging activities – both in the classroom and in homework. These can include, for example, more advanced project work. Talents in many subjects such as music, drama, art and sport are further developed through the extensive extra-curricular opportunities on offer.
Wrap-Around and Before & After School Provision
As well as the varied programme of after-school activities, Avalon operates a comprehensive wraparound care facility. Children can be left at the wraparound care from 7.45 am and after school until 6.00 pm.The wraparound is available to pupils of all ages. Whilst it is primarily a child care facility, it offers children the opportunity to complete homework with staff support or to engage in a range of educational and social activities.
School Life
School is about more than academic work. Sport and extra-curricular activities help to develop the all-round individuals who will be happy and successful in the world. Pupils have every opportunity, in team games and in individual sports, to develop their skills and learn about both leadership and effective teamwork. There is a strong tradition of both music and drama at Avalon. Many children receive individual instrumental lessons and many attend extra-curricular drama groups. Regular drama productions and musical concerts involve a large number of pupils. Additional ballet and art activities thrive.
Selection Criteria: Selective
Many children entering the Reception Class come from the own School Nursery but they also welcome a number who are new to the School. Older children may be admitted into any year group in the School if space allows. Children of all ages are invited to spend a day with their prospective classes before they join so they can feel comfortable with their environment. For older children they also ask for a report from their current school before confirming the offer of a place. At Avalon, we welcome children with a wide range of talents and interests as long as we are confident that they will be happy and can cope with the curriculum they offer.
