Junior Curriculum
Bedstone Junior School is an independent co-educational school for ages 4 to 11 years. Offering the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and Primary Key Stages 1 and 2 curriculums (see below), we deliver an all-round, non-selective, private education with day school from four to 8 years and optional boarding from eight years. In beautiful south Shropshire, on the Herefordshire/Powys border, like a prep school, we offer the ideal preparation for the onward journey into senior school. Our academic programme goes beyond the UK National Curriculum and is designed to blend seamlessly with the Senior College. Junior School staff are complemented by specialists from the Senior College, teaching French; science; design technology; music and physical education, all within specialist facilities like the science laboratories; the Murch sports centre; the art and design technology centre; ICT suites and Music School (complete with recording studio and soundproofed rehearsal pods).
Senior Curriculum
Once in the Senior College students are offered a broad pattern of academic work that goes beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum. Physics, Chemistry and Biology are studied as separate sciences; students study two modern foreign languages, French and Spanish. Music, Art, Design Technology, ICT, Religious Education, Physical Education and PSHE all form part of the core curriculum in forms 1 to 3 (years 7-9) alongside History, Geography, English and Mathematics. In addition, all students have three sessions of games each week. All courses are designed to cater not only for those who have entered the Senior College from our own Junior School but also for the large number of students who join at 11 or 13+ from other primary or preparatory schools. The selection of subjects to be pursued at GCSE is made at the end of the third year (National Curriculum Year 9). The more able students are expected to follow a course leading to examination in eleven GCSE subjects, whilst those who are less able will follow a course leading to examinations in six, seven, or eight GCSE subjects
Extra-Curricular Activities
The Junior School offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities throughout the school year. At Bedstone, we believe it is outside the classroom where the junior school students can really develop their skills and confidence.Three times each week there are enriched curriculum sessions from 4pm until the buses depart. While not compulsory, those children who do stay have the opportunity to engage in a whole raft of activities such as receiving expert tennis coaching, learning sign language, participating in our renowned Woodland School, undertaking arts and crafts and more besides.
Sport
Bedstone offers opportunities for sport which are, perhaps, unrivalled in a school of our size. The college fields almost sixty different teams in such sports as: hockey, rugby, netball, badminton, tennis, athletics, cross-country, swimming, cricket, rounders, basketball, volleyball, and football. Each group will either be involved in training, or in playing, several times each week as the season demands. Bedstone regularly achieves county, regional and even national success – which is quite outstanding for any school, particularly for one that is relatively small. Once again it is every student achieving the best of which he or she is capable of and living out the Bedstone ethos that is important
Senior School Extra Curricular Activities
It is beyond the classroom that a student’s character is really developed. Here at Bedstone, there are so many interests that can be pursued, some of which will become lifelong passions. These include such things as horseriding, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, drama, mountain biking, pottery, photography, dance or chess, for example. The College offers a large and diverse range of activities supported by clubs and societies. In addition to the many activities that happen within the campus, full use is made of the many facilities in the immediate area such as the famous mountain bike trail through the local forests, the dry ski slopes, the skating rink and the rock climbs that are within easy reach. The theatres in Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Stratford-upon-Avon are used to the full and the natural countryside that is all around makes the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme a very popular activity
