The Preparatory School consists of Nursery (6 months-4 years), Pre-Prep (Reception-Year 2) and Prep (Year 3-Year 5). Facilities

NURSERY (AGES 6 MONTHS – 4)
Nestled in the heart of Lucton Prep School, and set within 55 acres of Herefordshire countryside, we are particularly fortunate to have such a tranquil setting for children to grow, away from the hustle and bustle of larger towns and cities. The nursery has a real family feel, and the highly experienced staff, many of which have placed their own children here, provide a caring and stimulating environment where curiosity is keenly encouraged. Every child is unique and special and should be treated as such, and they pride ourselves on being able to nurture their individuality and build confidence.

PREP SCHOOL (AGES 4-10)
From their first days at the Prep School, Lucton provides an inspiring and happy learning environment where children nurture the fundamental skills that they need to flourish. Central to their growth at this stage is an emphasis on cultivating a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and developing the positive routines required to sustain this throughout their studies.Reassuringly small class sizes, combined with excellent teaching staff mean that we are able to rigorously challenge the most gifted whilst having the flexibility to provide additional support for those who may need it.

MIDDLE & SENIOR (AGES 10-16)
The transition to Middle School represents a significant stepping stone in a student’s development; however, Year 6 follows a similar learning environment to that of the Prep School, with students mostly being taught in their form room, predominantly by their Form Teacher. At Lucton, students do not take SATs, allowing them time to explore a full range of subjects in much greater depth and with far less pressure. This also contributes to making the transition in Year 7, when they begin to study a broader curriculum with the introduction of separate sciences and Latin, far smoother.

SIXTH FORM (AGES 16-18)
The environment in which students complete their A Levels can have a huge bearing, not only on which university they finally choose, but also on developing the focused and positive mind-set required to succeed in their future career.Applying to the UK’s top universities has never been more competitive and that’s why at Lucton they concentrate on delivering a stimulating and challenging programme of A Levels designed to give students the very best chance of reaching their full potential at university.

Lucton has a wide variety of extracurricular activities for students to take part in including a comprehensive programme of trips and visits. In recent years these have included cultural and historical trips, museums, equestrian events, theatre trips, adventure days, and much more.Lucton also boasts many in-school clubs; these vary from year to year but currently include journalism, chess, beginner guitar, book club, drama, electronics, ICT, and astronomy. There are also opportunities for students to perform both in and out of school in drama productions and orchestral performances, and for active students to further their sporting abilities by taking part in additional swimming classes, running club, lacrosse, and football to name but a few. Although the school day is slightly longer at Lucton, one of the many advantages is that many of these clubs and activities can be accommodated within it.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award aims to provide students with an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development. It is a nationally recognized award, valued by universities and employers.Students have the option to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, which for Senior School students, is delivered through the CCF, particularly the skill, physical, and expedition elements. For Sixth Form students, the Duke of Edinburgh Award can be taken either as part of CCF or independently of it.

BOARDING
For many students, boarding is central to their life at Lucton. Based in the heart of the school, they have two boarding houses: School Cottage and Croft House. For some, boarding may appear a daunting experience and the first occasion that many of them have spent time away from home; however, both School Cottage and Croft House have a strong family feel, both with live-in houseparents, who are on hand to provide help, support and guidance whenever it is needed.

Admission Details

The majority of students at Lucton will join in September; however, we will accept applications at any point throughout the academic year subject to the suitability of the applicant and a place being available. The admissions process begins by visiting the school where potential students will be able to tour the facilities, meet fellow students and staff and have an informal conversation with the Headteacher. Applicants will typically follow the visit by taking part in a Taster Day where they will have the opportunity to experience a normal day at the school whilst being informally assessed. We offer places based on a review of the applicant’s current school reports and an online CAT4 assessment, in addition to, an interview with the Headteacher and staff feedback provided during the Taster Day.
