Birtenshaw School Merseyside is an independent special school offering education for children aged 3-19 who have an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan), for pupils with significant physical impairment, complex health needs, learning disability and / or Autistic Spectrum Conditions. The dynamic and passionate staff are committed to the Birtenshaw vision of ‘Transforming Lives’. They ensure that pupils receive the same learning and social opportunities as other pupils; which they achieve by providing facilities which are second to none and a creative curriculum tailored to meet their needs. With dedicated staff, a unique approach and purpose built facilities: we provide a supportive, safe and happy environment; where all young people receive the support they need. The physical environment is of vital consideration when setting the climate for learning. The building is airy and spacious and provides a calm and safe environment in which pupils can thrive. Adopting a “Total Communication” approach means that we view all behaviour as communication, assessing the function of the behaviour and supporting pupils to communicate more effectively, leading to lower anxiety and improved relationships.

Curriculum / Prospectus / Classes
The Curriculum at Birtenshaw School Merseyside supports the vision of ‘Transforming Lives’ by giving pupils the opportunity to learn and develop in a supportive and creative environment in which there is a focus upon recognising achievement and supporting progression. The school provides a broad and balanced curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage for pre-school aged pupils and National Curriculum for those pupils of compulsory school age. The curriculum is individualised and flexible allowing for the needs of each pupil to be met.The curriculum is separated into 6 areas; English, Maths, Science, Creative Curriculum, Design Technology and PSHE. Through these subject areas, teachers plan daily learning opportunities to cover the whole curriculum, including making the best use of the facilities and therapy rooms in school as well opportunities for visits and trips out of school. This is blended with opportunities for pupils to develop functional skills, independence skills and skills for working life as appropriate. We use a phonics based approach to support the development of reading, writing and spelling. All progress in the curriculum is monitored and they track on a half termly basis using the SOLAR tracking system for special schools. Individual targets are set for every child based on their EHCP and their prior attainment.

Hydrotherapy Pool
The hydrotherapy pool is 25 metres long, with a multi-sensory sound and light system including spot lights, matrix lights, underwater lights and projectors to facilitate sensory stimulation.
Sensory Integration Room
The goal of a Sensory Integration room is to provide a safe place where someone who has Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) can go when they need to either calm or stimulate their senses. Staff support pupils to follow their sensory diet which regulates the senses and promotes a calm alert state.
Immersive Room
Immersive sensory rooms create a realistic setting and ‘immerse’ you into an interactive world within the room, from an underwater scene to an historical landmark. This room also has sensory light equipment to provide visual stimulation and promote communication.
Sensory Soft Play
Soft play encourages gross motor development, as pupils can work on stepping, climbing, crawling, jumping and rolling. This room encourages exploration, physical development and communication as well as offering highly motivating opportunities for teaching and learning across the curriculum.
