Facilities

Nursery Curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum supports the development of children delivered through play. The delivery of the curriculum requires a careful balance of both child-initiated and adult-led activities. We embrace the Unique child, supporting and extending their learning.

Key Stage 1 and 2 Curriculum
In Years 1 and 2, the children (aged 5 - 7) are taught through a broad and balanced curriculum. Our lessons follow the National Curriculum and more emphasis on the core subject skills in English and Mathematics.A wide range of other subjects are offered and the children are active and motivated in their learning. Specialist teachers take lessons in French, Computing, Music, PE and Games. Children are challenged to develop new talents and build on their independent learning and problem solving skills.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
They love images; studying them and making them. The art department delivers a Key Stage 3 curriculum tailored to the needs of the students and designed to ensure that everyone makes good progress, regardless of their starting level. Our Fine Art activities include painting, drawing, photography, printing, sculpture, collage and digital imagery, and we also include elements of graphic design and fashion. Everyone is guided through carefully developed projects that range from Japanese art to junk sculpture, from portraits to fabric design, from fashion to poster design using a system called RED-P that develops the ability of students to be increasingly self-motivated.

Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)
At A level, students study the AQA Biology specification, which covers topics ranging from biological molecules, cell structure, immune system, taxonomy, inheritance and variation, speciation, bioenergetics and cloning.Content is examined at the end of year 13 with three 2 hour papers, drawing on aspects from each discipline as well as practical work completed throughout the two years. Practical work also contributes towards the cross-board endorsement of practical skills; a must for any aspiring scientist.

Features

Things to note

We are immensely proud of Bishop Challoner and what we represent and stand for. We are committed to providing an environment in which all students are challenged to be the best they can be, and one in which pastoral care and wellbeing underpin academic and co-curricular excellence. This rings true in the school’s motto - ‘Dare to do your best’.

We believe in providing an education for life and we seek to ensure that the learning experience at our school blends the best of tradition with the exciting opportunities provided by developing new skills and aptitude for an ever-changing world. Learning how to learn is a key facet of our education philosophy and is an essential need for the twenty-first century.

We believe that a truly excellent school is about more than academic achievement alone: it is about developing a real passion for learning; a capacity for independent and critical thinking; self-awareness and resilience; self-confidence without arrogance and genuine interests that extend beyond the classroom walls.

At Bishop Challoner we focus on developing the whole person, aiming to ensure that each student leaves us ready for the challenges of life at university or the world of work, and understanding their responsibilities towards others.

We want our students to leave Bishop Challoner well equipped to engage positively with a rapidly changing world as accomplished problem solvers and confident individuals with a clear appreciation of and respect for the views and potential of others.

Extra Curricular

Sports
Bishop Challoner places a great deal of importance on sport and encourages healthy competition, regularly competing against other schools in most of the team games. They also hold competitions in school which are often based on the House system.

Charities
Bishop Challoner School has a proud tradition of supporting a number of charities. Each year there are charities supported by the school as a whole as well as each section of the school adopting their own charities. Money is raised by “own clothes days” as well as special fund raising activities such as Fun Days, sponsored activities and cake sales. During the last academic year the whole school raised a total in excess of £8,000 for charities as diverse as CAFOD (Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) and the RSPCA. We like to emphasise to pupils their Christian responsibility to those less advantaged than themselves.

Music & Drama
The after-school Drama Club is very popular. There is usually a Senior production each year as well as Junior and Infant productions. Many pupils learn to play instruments individually and musical ensembles exist for several types of instrument. The Music Department offers a wide range of peripatetic lessons which are available from the beginning of each academic year, with a wide choice of instruments available. Our pupils achieve fine grades in Music Examinations. The school also enters pupils into local festivals of music, speech and drama.

Admission Details

3+ (Nursery) Applications
The nursery setting is a happy and inviting place, allowing children from rising 3s - 4½ years to develop skills and make progress across all areas of development and learning in a caring and stimulating environment. Our aim is to encourage good social skills, an enthusiastic approach to work, independence and school readiness.

4+ (Reception) Applications
The Reception class is a very exciting and lively place to be. The children in our Reception class build on their academic, social, emotional and physical development. This is where their confidence and independence is developed further as tasks are devised to challenge and inspire learning in a cooperative, caring and positive environment.

7+ (Year 3) Applications
Pupils aged 7 - 11 in Key Stage 2 build upon the strong foundations from Key Stage 1. They are given numerous opportunities to become independent, enthusiastic and confident learners. 11+ (Year 7) Entry
The Senior School environment is a special one, where individual support is provided and pupils are challenged and encouraged to take risks.  We pride ourselves on our nurturing and caring environment and are keen to ensure that this is especially maintained to help our pupils with their transition into Senior School.

13+ (Year 9) Entry
The GCSE years are arguably the most important in the academic life of your child; as the most crucial grades on their university application form, they form the basis of the offers made for higher education. We are here to help; form tutors, subject staff, the Head of Year, the Deputy Head and the Head Teacher are all determined to ensure your child is fully supported throughout their GCSEs.
