They are an 'outstanding' specialist independent day school based in Motspur Park, Euston and Wimbledon, for children with speech, language and communication difficulties. The site at Motspur Park is for children aged 3 to 19 years while our Euston site currently has children aged 3 to 11 years. The school has a unique atmosphere created by its totally dedicated, highly professional and caring staff. Foundation Stage
Blossom House Foundation Stage is a specialist provision for children with speech, language and communication difficulties. The children have access to a small group learning environment for all activities, with a high adult to child ratio. The Foundation Stage is managed by a Speech and Language Therapist, with the team comprising an Early Years Teacher, additional Speech and Language Therapist, a teaching assistant who has received training to support children with language and communication difficulties, and an Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist. The children also have access to the Arts Psychotherapy team on a needs led basis.
Key Stage 1 & 2
The input is tailored to target specific areas of need and may include: developing pupils’ attention and listening skills, understanding and use of language skills and developing pragmatic language abilities. There is also a considerable focus on developing play and social skills, enabling the pupils to develop their friendships and to learn to interact appropriately with each other.There is a Speech & Language therapist assigned to each class group who works collaboratively with teaching staff to ensure a holistic provision for all pupils. This key therapist is able to provide therapy, advice and assistance to pupils on a needs-led basis. Speech and Language therapists and teachers plan together to provide a curriculum whereby the academic demands are supported and reinforced by the Speech and Language therapy team. This helps generalise these skills into different contexts and reinforce key vocabulary.
Key Stage 3
Speech & Language Therapy: delivered 3x45minute sessions per week. The programme delivered includes: developing pupils understanding and use of language skills, developing pragmatic language abilities, developing functional language skills and supporting the pupil’s ability to access the National Curriculum. The comprehensive Self Awareness Programme aims to support the pupils in identifying their strengths and difficulties and how this will impact upon their futures. This is delivered in a group, on an individual basis and with parents.There is a Speech & Language therapist assigned to each class group, who is able to provide advice and assistance to teaching staff as and when required. In addition, this key therapist is able to provide therapy, advice and assistance to pupils on a needs-led basis. Speech and Language therapists and teachers plan together to provide a curriculum whereby the academic demands are supported and reinforced by the Speech and Language therapy team and the Life Skills Programme is delivered throughout the curriculum. This helps generalise these skills into different contexts and reinforce key vocabulary.
Key Stage 4
Examinations & Qualifications: Currently offering GCSEs or Entry Level Courses in; English, Maths, Science, ICT, PE, Product Design, Working to a 3D brief, Homecooking skills, Art & Design, Photography, History, RE, Creative Arts and PSE. These examinations and qualifications are tailored to the individual groups and their areas of strength and interest.Other Curriculum Areas: Sex Education, Careers Education, Study Skills, Science workshops, PSHE and ASDAN CoPE.
Art
Art and Design plays an integral role within the Secondary School. Students are taught to use a range of techniques to record their observations in sketchbooks, journals and other media as a basis for exploring their ideas. They use a range of techniques and media, including painting and regularly visit relevant and interesting exhibitions that link to their learning. Pupils are taught to analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others, in order to strengthen the visual impact and applications of their work. The art department also teaches pupils about the history of art, craft, design and architecture.
Music
Music is an important part of the arts curriculum offering opportunities for creativity and expression. We stock a range of instruments for use by the pupils including a range of electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, ukuleles, keyboards, recorders, drum kits and tuned and unturned percussion from around the world. The curriculum is varied and wide reaching covering the fundamentals of music (dynamics, pitch etc), different genres and styles and music from different countries, cultures and times. Pupils may be looking at Mozart one term and Motown the next. We have extra-curricular music and choir clubs for those wishing to explore the area further. For those wishing to pursue instrumental skills to higher levels we offer one-to-one peripatetic lessons in singing, piano, brass (trumpet/trombone), guitar/bass guitar and drum kit. The peripatetic pupils also present regular concerts to showcase their work.
Sport
The school promotes a wide range of sporting opportunities to encourage the pupils to have a greater understanding of the benefits of physical education. Pupils have PE three to four times a week alternating between two different sports. They have two multipurpose sports halls, and have been awarded the ‘Activemark’ by Sport England for our commitment to promoting the advantages of physical activity.Among the wide range of competitive team sports on offer are football, hockey, basketball and cricket. The pupils also get the chance to take part in individual sports such as cross country running, gymnastics and athletics.
Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)
‘Dyslexia is a Specific Learning Difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling’. Dyslexia is also associated with difficulties with: Phonological awareness, Verbal memory, Working memory, Verbal processing speed, Following instructions. Dyslexia is best thought of as a continuum whereby some or all of these difficulties may occur. It often co-occurs alongside other Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyspraxia or Dyscalculia.
Therapies
Blossom House has a multidisciplinary, holistic approach to the children's educational, emotional and physical needs. Working alongside the teachers and their assistants are a team of in-house speech and language therapists, sensory integration trained occupational therapists and a physiotherapist. We also have arts therapists who work with pupils on an individual basis if required.
