Description

Colfe's School, previously Colfe's Grammar School is a co-educational independent day school in Lee in the London Borough of Lewisham, in southeast London, England, and one of the oldest schools in London.

Facilities

They have small class sizes of around 20 children and the aim is to create well-rounded young adults who will play an active role as good citizens – every pupil is valued for who they are and what they bring. Learning outside the classroom is very important to them. The unique, dedicated Outdoor Education programme starts in the Early Years Foundation Stage with a forest school, while older pupils enjoy adventure trips and residential stays, growing in confidence with every excursion. The Junior School pupils also share the first-class sports and drama facilities with the Senior School.

Features

Things to note

  • Senior pupils present annual exhibitions in Art & Design as well as theatrical performances and musical recitals throughout the year. Collaborations with world-renowned arts organisations such as Goldsmiths College, Trinity Laban Conservatoire and the National Youth Theatre will allow you to learn from the best.
  • Junior pupils fill huge sports hall with their artwork whilst the youngest pupils begin to hone their performance skills from the very beginning – the Early Years Christmas productions are not to be missed…
  • They compete in netball, rugby, hockey, swimming, cricket, football, athletics, cross-country, tennis and biathlon – all are open to every pupil (boys and girls). From national and county level to block-fixtures against local rivals. In the past year, every single pupil in Year 7 represented the school in some sort of competitive sport.

Admission Details

To apply to join Colfe’s at the main entry points  please fill in the online application form - link

(3+ and 4+) Nursery & Reception: They have two Nursery classes and three Reception classes, all of around 20 pupils each. Pupils can join the two Nursery classes at 3+ and the one new Reception class at 4+. Informal assessments for entry will take place at the beginning of the autumn term of the year preceding entry. They make the 3+ and 4+ assessment process as relaxed, child-friendly and enjoyable as possible. Your child will be invited to join a play session, where he or she will be given a short informal assessment by an experienced early years practitioner. Children born in summer will not be disadvantaged by their birth month – staff are experienced and will take this into account.

(11+) Year 7: Approximately 60-70 pupils enter Colfe’s in  Year 7 (age 11) each year from a wide selection of local primary schools and independent schools. In addition, pupils from Colfe’s Junior School move up into Year 7, making a year group total of around 120 (five Form Groups). Prospective pupils sit entrance examination and are interviewed in January for entry in September. They also ask for a reference from the pupil’s current school. Offers of places are made when the process is complete in mid February each year.

(16+) Sixth Form: The Sixth Form entrance assessment involves a written personal statement as well as two recent school reports and reference. Successful candidates will be invited to interview and offers made are conditional on achieving at least four Grade 7/A at GCSE.

11+ (Year 7 entry):

  • Academic: They award academic merit and means-tested scholarships to pupils entering the school at Year 7 who demonstrate exceptional ability in the entrance examination and who they believe will contribute markedly to the life of the school. If a candidate performs particularly well at interview this is also taken into consideration.
  • Co-curricular: The importance of the wider curriculum at Colfe’s is reflected in the policy of offering a limited number of scholarships in MusicSportDrama and Art. These are awarded after individual auditions and assessment (including interview and reference reviews) and successful pupils will be notified in their offer letters. More information on the eligibility criteria for these scholarships can be found in the co-curricular subject pages. Competition for co-curricular scholarships is extremely high and they urge you to carefully consider this before applying for your child.

16+ (Sixth Form entry):

  • They award academic merit scholarships to pupils joining Colfe’s for the first time in Year 12. Awards are made following the Sixth Form assessment process in the autumn term and are conditional on an agreed performance at GCSE. They have a number of means-tested scholarships (Leathersellers’ Scholarships) which are fully funded by Governors – the Leathersellers’ Company – for pupils joining Colfe’s from local state schools and who meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Awards for MusicSportDrama and Art may also be available at this stage; they are granted following interviews with the relevant Heads of Department and a member of the Senior Management Team.

Hardship Bursaries: Short-term hardship bursaries may be offered to current pupils whose financial circumstances have changed significantly since they joined the school. Please contact the Bursary for more information.
