Riverston School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 1 to 21 (Gender - 1 to 21 )
Riverston School provides a warm, caring and stimulating environment where children will learn new skills. We excel at providing each child with the right skills to prepare them for life in the wider world. We are part of a community characterised by a profound respect for and encouragement of diversity, where important differences among children and adults are celebrated. What drives us is ensuring that children have the best possible life chances and that they are not limited by the perceptions of themselves and what they might achieve in life. They value respect, honesty and kindness. We look out for one another and we are tolerant and accepting of each other’s differences. We are a family school and families look out for one another. Every child is different, every class is different, and every year group is different. One size rarely fits all. The challenges in education continue and will test our courage to stick to what we believe in, which is that education should be fair and every child should be valued. That is the cornerstone of our beliefs at Riverston School.
English and Literacy
As a department we aim to create an atmosphere of learning and enjoyment which challenges the able whilst supporting, with the help of our learning support staff, those who need it. We want all the pupils to feel included and motivated.
Mathematics and Numeracy
Mathematics at Riverston School is dynamic, ensuring an excitement and enthusiasm for the subject so that pupils share their teachers’ passion. The introduction and teaching of mathematics is a powerful tool for communication, decision-making, problem-solving, thinking, computation, analysing, research and creative skills. It is important that pupils learn that mathematics is not necessarily a subject on its own but has applications in other subjects and the world at large.
Games, Physical Education and Fitness
The PE and Games programme at Riverston School is vital in ensuring that every child appreciates the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. The programme is specifically designed to help children develop their fitness levels, motor skills, strength and love of sport. Sport for life is actively encouraged and boys and girls of all ages are given a variety of opportunities in which to explore their own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.
PHSE
Personal Social and Health Education provides a vital foundation for the personal development of young people in preparing them for adult life. It enables pupils to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence as well as learning fundamental British values. These things combined, help to combat the social exclusion and disaffection of any pupil, with the capacity to equip all young people with the skills and attitudes needed to react positively to the pressures of modern life.
Art & Design
Art and Design at Riverston School is a dynamic and exciting department where children can express their creative skills to the best of their ability. As a department we encourage self-confidence and as a result their work is of a consistently high standard. Pupils are required to create comprehensive and developed sketchbooks as well as regular larger scale, refined work for display. They have access to a wide variety of media including painting, printing, textiles, drawing, clay and wire sculpture work.
Design Technology
Design Technology is the most recent addition to the thriving Creative Arts department at Riverston School. Design Technology is a subject where children’s capability in designing and making is developed through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding.
Drama & Performing Arts
Drama is taught from Year 7 with pupils attending a weekly class in the drama studio. The department is well resourced with scripts and throughout the year props and costumes are added to the stock. For every year group the term is spent developing skills to create and perform a final piece in small groups at the end of the term, covering a variety of themes and genres of theatre from Shakespeare to Soap Opera, Horror movies to Greek Tragedy.
Music
Music is studied by every pupil at Riverston School in Key Stage 3, with the option of studying BTEC Music at Key Stage 4 and A Level Music in Year 12. Singing, Performing, Composing and Listening form an integral part of each topic with lessons being as practical as possible.
