Dartford Grammar School was founded in 1576 and is one of the oldest schools in England. Year 7-9
In Years 7 – 9, students develop their knowledge and understanding of their subjects through an inquiry based learning approach to the Middle Years Programme which is underpinned by the philosophy of the Learner Profile. In Years 10 and 11, students follow a broad range of academic GCSE subjects, including English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, either double Science or Biology, Chemistry and Physics, two Humanities from History, Geography and Religious Studies and a further option from Art, Drama, Music, Computer Science and Physical Education. We are the only school nationally where all students sit GCSE examinations in two Modern Foreign Languages, one from Mandarin Chinese or Japanese then either French, German, Latin or Spanish. Our innovative Creativity Week programmes enables all students to enjoy a cross-discipline approach to their learning and develops independence and autonomy.
Sixth Form
In the Sixth Form, we offer the IB Diploma to over 600 students. The Diploma offers students a fulltime real education that equips them with the key skills and a broad but deep subject knowledge to succeed in higher education or employment. The IB Diploma is recognised around the world and so allows students to access universities both in the United Kingdom and internationally. Through the IB Diploma, all students study English, Mathematics, a Language, a Science, a Humanity and either an Arts subject or a second choice from Languages, Science or Humanities. Students choose their six subjects from two levels of entry; three at higher level and three at standard level. Additionally students complete a 4000 word Extended Essay, as well as a study of Theory of Knowledge and an exciting Creativity, Activity and Service project (CAS).
Sport and Games
Rugby is played during the first 4 terms of the school calendar with matches on every Saturday against local schools. The Y7 and Y9 tours take place in term 3, the girls rugby Cambridge tour goes annually in Term3, and the bi-annual senior tour takes place near the end of the summer holiday. During the 3rd and 4th terms, teams will also play Rugby 7s. Throughout the year the school will compete in fixtures each week against other schools as well as the County Cup and NatWest Vase competitions. They have 5 rugby pitches at the school field and the Parents Association run the very popular Ruck Shop cafe in the Pavilion every Saturday during the season. Cricket is played during the final two terms of the school calendar, with winter nets happening throughout the rest of the year. The school tours Barbados every two years with Y9 and Y10 players enjoying the Caribbean. The school competes in fixtures every Saturday in the summer as well as the County Cup competitions.
Music
The Music department at Dartford Grammar School offers a wide range of Ensembles and Choirs for students of all skills and abilities, absolute beginners to Grade 8 and above players.
Drama
They offer Extra-Curricular clubs and projects at DGS. The following have run the past few years: A school production of a musical, put on annually. Recent productions include Guys and Dolls, Bugsy Malone, Beauty and the Beast and West Side Story, Shakespeare Schools Festival. Recent productions include Othello, Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing, Key Stage Three Drama club and productions, Dance workshops with the Brit School, Workshops with Vamos Theatre, Frantic Assembly and Les Enfants Terribles, Trips to the West End
