Fosse Bank School is Independent Primary school in Kent for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
Children at this school come from Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Kings Hill and many of the picturesque villages in between. Children can join the school from the age of two years old and are also able to join older classes as they move into the area. Being a relatively small school, staff know the children exceptionally well and cater for individual requirements, both academic and pastoral. They delight in having children who are confident and independent and keen to learn. Staff work with parents right the way through school and as the pupils reach the upper years they ensure the best outcome for each child as they prepare for senior schools.
EARLY YEARS
Fosse Bank believes that children thrive in a resourceful and interactive environment, which stimulates their interests, and leads to creative and self-reflective thinking. The role as teachers is to scaffold around those interests and use open ended questioning to extend the children’s curiosity. They feel the teaching style that complements the vision most is an approach called In the moment planning. This is a very simple idea – observing and interacting with children as they pursue their own interests and challenges and also assessing and moving the learning on in that moment. The written account of some of these interactions becomes a learning journey and they have seen that children achieve their goals more quickly and challenge themselves further.
RECEPTION
In reception we plan around quality children’s literature. The direction they take is often led by the children themselves, they just ensure that all curriculum needs are met while satisfying their natural curiosity. In the Autumn term they start with ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. The owl chicks wake one night to find their mother has gone. The story follows the emotions that the chicks feel as they wait for their mothers return, a similar set of feelings that new Reception children may have about starting school. In the second half of the term we look at Michael Rosen’s ‘They’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ with all its wonderful descriptive language and foot stomping rhythm.
CURRICULUM
The Fosse Bank curriculum is based on the National Curriculum but broadened to make it appropriate for the pupils we have. They also add subjects that they consider important including Forest School, Current Affairs, French, Latin and, from Year 4, preparation for senior school exams. There is a strong and structured education in Mathematics and English with individual children catered for in the planning and delivery of lessons. Pupils also learn History, Geography, Science, Computing, French, PE,Art, Music and Drama. The youngest children learn phonics from Kindergarten and from Reception to Year 3 with the Read Write, Ink scheme that ensures a thorough grounding in phonics for reading and writing.
PSHCE
PSHCE, which is closely intertwined with SMSC, covers a range of practices including social skills, British Values, emotional intelligence, morals, health, spiritual and cultural education, as well as citizenship. These help give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens. They encourage the children to take part in a wide variety of activities and experiences, across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to their school and communities where they can. In doing so, they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Each term, they offer a different selection of before and after-school clubs and the children have the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports such as: ballet, jazz, cross-country, football, karate, chess, tennis and ball skills.
Sport
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, the focus is on developing the children’s enthusiasm and gross motor skills. The children are encouraged to explore a range of equipment and have a go at developing their movement skills as they learn to control their own body and become aware of others. They learn about agility, balance and co-ordination through basic movement, climbing, balancing, throwing, catching and controlling balls using a range of equipment.
After school clubs
In addition to the School Curriculum, they offer an extensive, stimulating range of Clubs and activities for children throughout the school both during the day and after school. Sport is a valued part of the curriculum. The children are able to join a variety of clubs which may include Gymnastics, Football, Rugby, Netball, Cross Country and Team Games. In the Summer months they may also offer Rounders, Cricket and Athletics.
