Facilities

Reception Class
The Reception class is an exciting place at Solefield School. Boys are actively engaged in enthusiastic learning and make excellent progress during the year in all aspects of their development. They achieve well above the national average in numeracy and literacy by the end of their first year. They have a small class with a full-time teacher and teaching assistant. They believe it is very important to nurture a close working relationship between the staff, parents and boys as they settle into Solefield School and embark upon their wonderful learning journey here. We take pride in knowing our individual boys well.

Pre-Prep
The Pre-Prep, for boys in Reception to Year 2, is housed in a separate, beautifully-resourced area of the school where they can enjoy a rich and varied learning environment to develop their skills and abilities, with their own outside learning space.Individual form teachers are responsible for delivering the main areas of the curriculum; they are supported by a teaching assistant. Our staff to pupil ratio ensures they understand all the boys really well, and are able to support and challenge them as they develop into confident learners. For extra-curricular subjects, boys are taught by subject specialists. Boys study French, Art, Sport, Music and ICT with specialist teachers in specialist rooms. Children learn to play a particular instrument as part of their Music lessons every week, with Reception learning the ocarina, Year 1 the violin and Year 2 the recorder!  Science is taught in a very practical way with lots of experiments and explosions. Each child performs in a variety of plays and performances every year.

Curriculum
At Solefield, they provide a modern and dynamic classroom environment, whilst maintaining and encouraging the traditional values of learning one would expect of a highly successful and well-established Prep School. As well as traditional subjects, all pupils study French, Music, Art and Drama  from Reception upwards. Alongside this, there is ample opportunity to augment their learning and develop their creativity using a variety of resources from programming Beebots to re-enacting Greek myths in Latin.

Things to note

Clubs
Extra-curricular clubs and activities play a significant role in education at Solefield. They believe the clubs help sculpt pupils as individuals, build their confidence and develop social skills. With a wide range of activities on offer, there is truly something for everyone. They encourage all boys to take part in our extensive programme, which may lead them to discover new talents or life-long interests.

Sport
At Solefield, they use sport to develop determination, resilience, cooperative skills and a healthy work ethic; it is an integral part of school life and they view it as essential. It is well documented that physical activity helps to develop fantastic classroom learning, as it has a direct link to the coordination of the brain and builds a healthy self-esteem.In recent years, they have won a number of sporting titles, both nationally and locally, including plates for rugby at Sutton Valence and for football at New Beacon, Hilden Grange and Lancing where a Solefield boy was voted player of the tournament.

Drama
The main purpose of Drama at Solefield is to develop self-confidence, trust, working collaboratively and empathy, they understand that through creativity we can foster these skills. No matter what a pupil’s ability may be, their contributions are respected and appreciated. The boys love acting and thrive in drama lessons which are planned to develop character and self-belief.  Timetabled lessons introduce pupils to improvisation, speaking in public, script writing and empathy.  Learning to work as a team member is an essential skill which is developed.

Music
The all-inclusive policy extends to Music, in which all boys are introduced to the fundamental activities of performing, listening and composing. Solefield has a purpose-built music school which helps to foster a strong tradition of playing and performing. This is reflected in the large percentage of boys who have individual music lessons on a wide variety of instruments.Reception boys experience rhythm, percussion and singing, together with group violin lessons. Boys in Year 1 learn the ocarina, Year 2 learn the recorder, Years 3 and 4 learn the melodica, and Year 5 learn the ukulele.
