Curriculum
At KS3, students study a core academic curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, ICT, RE and Language. In addition to this, all students access PE and Arts (including Textiles, Drama and Graphics). Students select their language choice prior to arriving in Year 7.
50 period timetable over two weeks.
Hour long lessons, with some double lessons at GCSE and A Level.
Students complete up to 11 GCSEs (current Year 9’s and up, students in current Year 8 will only complete up to 10 GCSEs. See Curriculum booklet below for more details).
Choice of three languages at KS3, with the option to additionally study a 2nd language in Year 9.
3 year KS4 – 5 option choices to retain breadth but enable depth of study. Students in Year 8 now choose 5 option choices to study in Year 9 and at the end of Year 9 they will “drop” one of these choices and in Year 10 will study 4.
KS4 pathway model – 4 routes.
Vocational options at KS4 including, Hair and Beauty, Child Development, Construction, Cambridge National PE.
Vocational options at KS5 including BTECs in Science, Business, Sport and an A-Level in Child Development.
An A-Level offer of 38 subjects in addition.
KS5 pathway model – 4 routes, retaining the ability to study and sit exams in 4 A-Levels.
AS levels are retained in some subjects and are taken by students who wish to cease studying 1 of their 4 A-Levels at the end of Year 12.
A strong enrichment programme at KS5 including the option to study EPQ, critical thinking, Sports Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA), programmes of peer tutoring and peer mentoring.
Sixth Form
At George Abbot, they are proud to have an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ Sixth Form which excels in academic performance and provision while providing high quality pastoral care and a wide range of opportunities for enrichment.They are the largest school based Sixth Form in Guildford and with nearly 500 students we are able to offer a broad and challenging curriculum. This allows us to offer a wide choice of over 40 subjects at A-Level & BTEC, GCSE re-take options and additional enrichment courses to enable the creation of a learning pathway that is suited to each individual student’s needs and aspirations.
Extra Curricular
All students in Years 7-11 follow a planned programme of Personal, Social and Health Education/Citizenship for one lesson a week. Lessons provide opportunities to consider and evaluate knowledge, attitudes and beliefs and develop the skills and understanding necessary for them to be positive, responsible and healthy members of society.Sex education is provided as part of this programme. It is complementary to, and supportive of, the role of parents and places high value on family life and long term, committed relationships. The course conforms to the current ‘Curriculum Guidelines – Sex Education’ produced by Surrey County Council. Parents are welcome to see materials used and discuss aspects of the course with staff.
