Children see magic because they look for it. At Great Walstead, they want to help them keep seeing it. That's why they encourage the children to learn through play, exploration and self-discovery. Don't worry though, they also set the academic standards extremely high, with guidance from the National Curriculum and Independent Schools Examination Board

Facilities

Pre School
The light and spacious classrooms are a treasure trove of fun equipment and toys designed to enrich the learning experience and support your child's development. We provide resources and activities which they find stimulating and challenging, and where enjoyment and fun are linked to discovery and learning. We are passionate about outdoor play and make full use of our purpose built outdoor learning area, Forest School and the 100 acres of woodland to provide a variety of learning opportunities. Here, children can fill their lungs with fresh air whilst they build dens, play in the mud kitchen, explore the huge covered sandpit or try their hand at gardening. The children love listening to stories in the tree house, around the campfire. All children have opportunities to take part in outdoor learning sessions and have the most amazing adventures in the wonderful woodland and in the ‘Secret Garden’.

Pre Prep School
They are passionate about outdoor learning and we make use of the Outdoor Classroom, Forest School and the 100 acres of woodland to provide a variety of exceptional learning opportunities. In addition to having our own dedicated and secure play areas, children have access to the school's great facilities which include the Music School, Performing Arts Centre, all-weather pitches and, from Reception, the Swimming Pool.

Prep School
The confidence of the children grows enormously in their time in the Junior School at Great Walstead. This is the department that covers our 7-9 year olds or Years 3 and 4. The children become more independent socially and academically and many older pupils look back fondly on this time as a magical two years. The children in the Junior School are mainly taught by their form teachers. This gives teachers opportunities to nurture each individual effectively, and makes it possible to build and maintain cross-curricular links. However, specialist teachers teach some of the subjects (Music, Art, Sport, French, ICT).

Admission Details

At Great Walstead, they want to foster a love of learning and curiosity. They want the children to have a thirst for discovery as well as a sense of adventure and creativity. Most importantly though, we want all our pupils to have fun!We put as much value on skills which include curiosity, creativity and the ability to confidently make and then learn from our mistakes.  These become the focus in the classroom where subjects are linked through engaging topics and cross curricular opportunities so that pupils are able to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary skills.  By developing this attitude at a younger age, it becomes a habit and is something that will stay with them during and after their schooling life.

Scholarships

Scholarship
They offer 11+ scholarships to pupils in year 6 across the different disciplines of school life to those pupils who show both high levels of interest and potential.  Awards are offered to pupils who, in our view, we feel are likely candidates for a similar award as they move into their senior school at 13+.  11+ scholarships are offered for the Academics, Sport, Drama, Music and Art.A limited number of scholarships are being offered to pupils who are currently in Year 6. These scholarships are for children who are looking to apply for similar scholarships to their chosen senior schools.  Children applying for these scholarships are expected to be working at a high level in their field. The benchmark for awarding scholarships will be senior schools’ expectations of potential scholars at 13+.  Pupils’ general conduct and approach to school life will also be an important factor in the decision-making process.
