11-16 Years

Description

The Shires provides exceptional education, care and support for young people aged 11-19 years old with autism, associated learning disabilities and complex needs. We are passionate about providing opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, enabling each young person to realise their full academic potential and develop essential social, emotional and life skills.

Facilities

The Shires at Oakham has a new purpose-built school adjacent to the main house. All classroom spaces at The Shires Stretton and The Shires Oakham are personalised to the needs of the young people that use them. High quality visual support and sensory strategies are available in each room and young people are supported to engage in learning opportunities via the implementation of other high quality ASD provision such as TEACCH work systems built around their own working preference and styles.

At The Shires we aim to find a balance between classroom based learning and wider development opportunities within the community settings of Oakham, Stretton, Stamford and Rutland Water. We are able to provide more vocational opportunities thanks to close links with local education providers such as Melton Learning Hub, Stamford College, and Peterborough Regional College.

The Shires team consists of teachers, teaching assistants, care support workers and therapists who support our young people with their individual and specific needs.

Our therapeutic support team includes:
 – Speech and Language Therapist
 – Occupational Therapist
 – Art Therapist

Features

Things to note

At The Shires we have two independent schools at Stretton and Oakham.  We provide residential care and education for up to 38 and 52 weeks of the year, as well as day placements for young people aged between 11 and 19 who have a primary diagnosis of autism, learning disabilities and complex needs. We strive to deliver a pupil-centred education in a safe, friendly, enriching environment, where all our young people love to learn.

The new, purpose-built school building offers four classrooms, a sensory integration room and direct access out to purposeful outdoor spaces aimed at providing our young people with the opportunity and ability to develop self-regulatory skills in a safe environment.

Providing small class groups, supported by a Teacher, Teaching Assistant and support staff, the young people benefit from an individualised and person-centred approach where they can progress at their own pace appropriate to their specific needs. Teachers can creatively tailor lessons to ensure that all individual learning needs are addressed and met. We can also schedule one-to-one interventions and therapy sessions to meet each young person’s broader individual needs to meet the requirements for each young person’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
