Heath Mount is a leading independent day and boarding school for boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 13.  The pupils are privileged to be educated at one of the oldest Prep Schools in the country, founded in 1796 and situated since 1934 in the Grade I listed mansion of the Woodhall Park Estate just outside Hertford. The idyllic woodland setting, dynamic teaching staff, family ethos and award-winning pastoral care provide a joyful and stimulating learning environment.  They offer a broad curriculum that balances academic rigour with remarkable enrichment opportunities.  The pupils achieve outstanding results within a nurturing and supportive framework that puts happiness and mental wellbeing at the heart of all we do.

Facilities

EARLY YEARS
At Heath Mount’s Pre-Prep, all children are encouraged to explore, be curious and develop to their full potential in a secure and nurturing environment. We want their first steps in education to be full of happiness, wonder, creativity and hands-on experiences that will foster a life-long love of learning.  Thanks to small class sizes and a home-from-home mentality, they really get to know each child and ensure they feel valued for who they are - celebrating successes no matter how big or small. The highly experienced team of Early Years teachers and classroom assistants deliver an enriching and creative curriculum that cements core learning skills and strategies while offering abundant opportunities to learn through play and build friendships.  Supported by strong moral values, children quickly learn the importance of self-respect and show courtesy and kindness for others. In the Pre-Prep we make the most of the acres of beautiful grounds with plenty of opportunity for our youngest pupils to play and learn in the great outdoors including weekly Forest School in the woods.

PREP
The Prep School is split into three sections with each having a Head of Year to oversee the pastoral and academic welfare of each year group. These sections are known as Lower School (Years 3 and 4), Middle School (Years 5 and 6) and Senior School (Years 7 and 8). They are very proud to be a 13+ school and children leave us to go to some of the most prestigious schools in the country – many gaining scholarships. In the Prep School, they aspire to find the talent that lies within each child and then nurture it.  They are fortunate to have an outstanding team of teachers and support staff who are skilled and passionate about teaching children and are able to give our pupils opportunities and experiences that few Prep schools can offer.

FOREST SCHOOL
The Forest School is an integral part of our holistic approach to education and emotional wellbeing in the Early Years Curriculum.  This stimulating learning environment offers pupils from Nursery up to Year 3 the chance to be hands-on investigators and free-thinkers whose creativity and imagination can run wild. Pre-Prep children love their weekly sessions in Heath Mount's own Stumble Trip Woods. Whether they are going on a mini-beast hunt, trying out saws and hammers or cooking in the mud kitchen, there's fun and adventure galore. They know children love to be in the great outdoors and at Heath Mount they are lucky to have acres of woodland and parkland for our boys and girls to enjoy!

Things to note

Extra-Curricular
Heath Mount is dedicated to not only providing an academically rich and rigorous curriculum but also an inclusive and exciting extra-curricular programme that promotes a well-rounded education. The adventurous Outdoor Education programme,  broad range of trips, inspiring workshops and incredible selection of clubs and activities give pupils skills for life as well as the chance to develop their interests and passions.

Clubs
They offer over 50 clubs per week that take place before school, in break times and after school as part of the wraparound care provision. The wide-ranging choice of activities allows children to try new things, develop existing skills and interests and build friendships outside the classroom. Most clubs are free and run by the talented staff while some specialist clubs are run by outside providers and require payment. Whether your child loves lego, crafting, sports or performing arts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Scholarships

Scolarship
Each year, they offer pupils in Year 6 the opportunity to be considered for a number of scholarship awards for the final two years at Heath Mount that come into effect as they enter Year 7. They hope that as the Scholars progress through the School, they will encourage other pupils to aspire to excellence in all aspects of school life. There are four categories of award: Academic, Art, Music and Sport.  The assessments for each discipline will vary. Children who do very well in their scholarship assessments may be awarded an All-Rounder Scholarship, although these cannot be applied for.  There is no financial reward for a scholarship on an individual basis. However, all scholars’ programmes and equipment will be funded in their entirety (which may include music lessons). Scholarships are available to current pupils and new pupils entering Year 7.
