They are a small school, with big ambition!  They are ambitious for our pupils, their development, academic attainment and welfare.  For over 130 years, Horris Hill has been committed to provide an outstanding education, in a nurturing environment where children can achieve consistently brilliant results. Today, they continue to deliver this commitment and provide each individual pupil with the tools they need to grow and succeed; academically and creatively.Whilst the results speak for themselves and they are fortunate to send a high proportion of pupils to academically selective schools at 13+, a Horris Hill education goes beyond the classroom.  The job is to prepare pupils for the world beyond education, to teach each pupil as an individual and to guide parents on selecting a senior school that will continue to help their child become the best version of themselves.

Lower School (R-Y3)
High aspirations are fundamental to our approach. From the early stages of learning in Reception to Year 3, we are focused on developing lifelong learners who thrive on challenge and adventure.  The curriculum is bespoke, child led and most importantly fun. The unique holistic programme is immersive, fast paced, high energy and gets the very best from the children. Children learn best when academic rigour is accompanied by time outdoors and our Horris Hill Wild Child Charter recognises this. By the time the children are in Year 3, ready to transition into our Upper School, they will have equipped them with a secure foundation built on a dynamic, broad and balanced range of educational opportunities and experiences.

Upper School (Y4-Y8)
There is a traditional academic rigour, for example through Classics, Advanced Maths and separate Sciences taught in an enthusiastic and inspiring way. All children in the Upper School (Years 4-8) study English, Maths, Science, French, Latin, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Music, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, PSHE, Information Technology and Physical Education.  Our boarding framework allows us more class time, starting at 8.30am and going on until 6.30pm five days a week for those in the final years, within which time they include prep, activities, music practice, tutor sessions,on top of a full timetable of 15 different subjects. The children work at school but not at home.  There is no homework at Horris Hill!

Features

Things to note

Co-Curricular Programme
Outside of the curriculum, they offer an extensive co-curricular programme for children to enjoy.  School Life at Horris Hill School is enriched a variety of opportunity for the children to try out new activities, to discover and develop their own individual abilities and talents. They are very fortunate to have 65 acres of beautiful countryside, including extensive playing fields and woodland, providing exciting opportunities to the children.

Outdoor Learning
With such an abundance of countryside to explore, you will not be surprised to read that we have a strong emphasis on outdoor learning! They can all benefit from time spent outside and research has shown the importance of nature to the human mind and body.  So, to enrich the children’s learning and improve their motivation, self-esteem and problem solving, we use our spacious grounds to provide learning opportunities.

The Creative Arts
Performance, whether in music or drama, will certainly build confidence and enthusiasm in your child. Horris Hill pupils have enthusiasm and confidence in abundance and regularly win performance scholarships to public schools. They measure success in a number of ways. One of these is to look at the enthusiasm our pupils have for performing. Almost all the pupils take individual music lessons as well as class music in the purpose-built Music School. Your child will have many opportunities to act, sing, or dance during their time at school in the formal productions and concerts, in the weekly form assemblies, or even our regular talent shows.
