Thorngrove School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 13 (Gender - 3 to 13 )
Thorngrove is a friendly, family school providing a wonderful education for children aged 2 ½ to 13 years. The journey starts at our wonderful Nursery. All the buildings are architect-designed and are set in 25 acres of beautiful grounds. We pride ourselves on providing every child with an outstanding education, excellent pastoral care and an enriching environment. Children only get one childhood and we firmly believe it is our job to make it an experience they will cherish and reflect on positively. All children are unique, with gifts and talents that will enrich their lives and others around them. The focus at Thorngrove is to allow the children to develop and celebrate their individuality. They aim to give each child a breadth of experience throughout their Prep School education and the opportunity to stretch themselves in all areas of school life.
Lower School
The Lower School (Reception-Year 2) is an exciting place to learn and play. The classrooms are situated on the ground floor of the main building and have easy access to the play areas and the assembly hall.Initially in Reception the children cover a broad range of topics linked to the Early Years Foundation Curriculum. In Year 1 and 2, teaching will cover Literacy, Numeracy, Topic Work, French, Art and Design, Information Technology, Music, Drama, Physical Education and Forest School. In support of early literacy, the children use Read Write Inc. which is a systematic phonics scheme. The children also have regular access to iPads and interactive whiteboards. The children love to explore the outdoors and often visit the woods, fields and eco-garden area
Prep School
In Year 3 children make a smooth transition into the Prep School. Initially, most lessons are taught in their classrooms by their form teacher but as they progress through the years they start to move around the campus and by Year 5 the children go to specialist classrooms and teachers.Children benefit from an exciting curriculum, strong pastoral support and opportunities to take on various roles of responsibility including being members of the School Council and Prefect roles.
Performing Arts
Thorngrove is renowned for its Performing Arts programme. Children are exposed to drama, dance and music at an early age and enjoy performing in front of their peers and parents on a regular basis. Children have a specialist music teacher from Nursery up and they also have the chance to do ballet and contemporary dance as an activity. Drama is taught as part of the English curriculum and from Year 3 as a separate subject by a specialist drama teacher. Every child has the opportunity to be in productions whilst at Thorngrove. In the past, the children have performed in shows including Bugsy Malone, The Rocky Monster Show and Grease.
Art
Art is taught in a purpose built, light and airy classroom. There is also a kiln available for pottery and children are often seen around the school using the beautiful grounds as a stimulus for their artwork. One of the key events in the Art calendar is the popular Spring Art Exhibition. Parents and pupils thoroughly enjoy viewing the hundreds of stunning entries and voting for the ‘Pupils’ Choice Award’. The Art department makes every effort to ensure that each pupil, from Nursery to Y8, develops the confidence to contribute in class at their own individual level and pace, whilst at the same time encouraging them to work to the very best of their ability.
Forest School
In Forest School they aim to encourage and inspire children of any age through mastery of small, achievable tasks in a woodland environment, to grow in confidence and independence so that they are able to develop a sense of self-worth. At Thorngrove, they operate the Forest School within our own woods. The main focus for regular activities is the ‘Base Camp’. A base camp was cleared in one of the drier parts of the woods which enables us to go outside even when the rest of the wood is very boggy!
