Facilities

  • The School’s original 1930s buildings provide outstanding spaces: a hammer-beamed assembly hall called Big School, an extensive library and large laboratories. 
  • The £11m Sir Paul and Lady Ruddock Performing Arts Centre, which opened in 2012, provides a 400-seater concert hall, 120-seater studio theatre, a dance studio and further provision for the teaching, rehearsal and practice of music, dance and drama.
  • The Andrew Brode Wing, which opened in 2013, has provided new laboratories for Physics and Chemistry, a new Modern Languages Department and a bright and spacious Sixth Form Centre.
  • The School has extensive grounds which provide outstanding facilities for sporting pursuits. In total there are eight rugby pitches, four cricket pitches, three astro hockey pitches, five tennis courts, a rifle range, an athletics track and seven artificial surfaced cricket nets.In front of the School’s main buildings there are five rugby pitches in the winter and three cricket grounds in the summer plus a small astro pitch for hockey and football. 
  • For indoor sport, The Andrew Brode Sports Centre, which officially opened in May 2019, provides a large sports hall, cardiovascular fitness room, multipurpose space, classroom and changing rooms. There is also a 25-metre indoor swimming pool and the School’s original sports hall is being redeveloped.
  • The School’s Memorial Chapel is a beautiful piece of architechture.
  • The library has a stock of over 20,000 printed books.

Things to note

  • Sport is integral to school life and boys have a minimum of one PE lesson per week as well as an afternoon dedicated to games. 
  • Drama is central to the lives of many pupils at King Edward’s and extensive co-curricular programme involves hundreds of pupils both on and off the stage. 
  • There is a great musical tradition at King Edward’s and a wealth of musical opportunities for boys to take part in. 
  • Extensive programme of trips and expeditions provides another world of activity and adventure. With over 140 trips taking place each year, ranging from small-scale trips within the UK to destinations further afield, there is something for every boy to enjoy.
  • There are around 50 clubs and societies that meet during lunchtime or after school, so there really is something to interest everyone.
  • To the great joy of pupils and staff alike, there are no academic lessons on Friday afternoons, which enables boys to try all sorts of different activities and develop new skills.

Fees

Tuition fee: The fees for the 2022/23 academic year are £5,175 per term (three terms per annum). Tuition fees are inclusive and cover almost all extras including books, stationery, materials, Personal Accident Insurance and public examination fees (except re-sits). Other costs such as private music lessons, school meals, school camps and educational trips are charged for separately in the course of the year. All applicants to the school must pay £25 to cover administrative costs. A deposit of £400 is payable on acceptance of a place and is refunded when a pupil leaves the school, less any unpaid fees and charges.

Sibling discount: For parents with three children on full fees in either King Edward’s School or King Edward VI High School for Girls at the same time, a 25% discount is given on the fees of the eldest child. 

Catering: All boys in Year 7 are required to participate in the lunch system. Lunches are £3.80 per day and are payable termly. Pupils in Year 8 to Year 11 can opt in or out of the catering system on a termly basis. A range of catering options are available for pupils in the Sixth Form. Scholarships

Academic scholarships: A number of academic scholarships are awarded to able boys entering Year 7 (11+), Year 9 (13+) and the Sixth Form. All scholarships are awarded on merit and range in value from 5% to 50% of the annual school fees. At Year 7 and Year 9 entry, academic scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance in the entrance exam and an interview. In addition, each year five Foundation Scholarships are awarded to the five best Year 7 candidates. For Sixth Form candidates, academic scholarships are awarded on the basis of predicted grades and an interview. At all entry points, consideration for an academic scholarship is automatic and no separate application is required.

Music scholarships: Music scholarships are offered to exceptional young musicians entering Year 7 and occasionally those entering Year 9 and the Sixth Form. All candidates must audition for a music scholarship and a separate application form can be requested when making an application to the School. All scholarships are awarded for the duration of a boy’s time at the School, subject to conduct and good progress.
