Kingston Grammar School is an independent co-educational day school in Kingston from ages 11 to 18.

Facilities

  • The Frayn Library boasts over 15,000 fiction and non-fiction books including textbooks and revision guides, a huge range of extended reading material and fiction for all age groups and interests.There are iPads, laptops and Chromebooks available for use in the library and power sockets provided on study tables throughout. WiFi is available and students' are welcome to bring in their own devices. 
  • Hawkes Café is a dedicated space for Sixth Form students to socialise. 
  • The Michael Frayn Theatre features state-of-the-art lighting, sound and special-effects technology and a sprung wooden floor, making it ideal for students’ drama, dance and musical performances.
  • All modern, light classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, and iPads, laptops and Chromebooks are available for class use. 
  • The School Hall has excellent acoustics and can seat up to 350 people. It is regularly used for conferences, lectures and presentations, exhibitions and concerts.
  • The Art facilities include four bright and well-equipped studios, intaglio and relief print-making facilities, an ICT suite plus a dedicated set of iPads, a photographic dark room and a ceramics workshop. 
  • The STEAM Room is the base for both Junior Makers’ and Digital Makers’ clubs, where students get the opportunity to build their own physical computing and robotics projects. 
  • The chapel has excellent acoustics and as such is used by the School for music recitals. 
  • The state-of-the-art sport facilities now include: Six netball courts, Six cricket nets, Long jump pit, Four football pitches, Four cricket squares, Eight tennis courts, Two astro turf hockey pitches, One astro turf practice area, Pavilions, Boat house.

  • The co-curricular programme at KGS is rich and varied, and complements the busy academic life of students. With opportunities to work as part of a team with students of all ages, take on responsibility, face new challenges and acquire new skills, it has been designed to add a real breadth and depth to the students' own interests and experiences. From Technology Club to CCF, Language Leaders to Photography and Junior Choir to Chess, there really is something for all interests and abilities. They actively encourage all First Years to get involved and sign up to a club or two from the 72 on offer during the Co-Curricular Fair held in the Autumn term.

Admission Details

11+ ENTRY: Examination papers are taken in English and Mathematics. If successful in these papers, candidates will be invited for a one-to-one interview with a member of staff which will either be of a general nature, or with an English or Mathematics focus (depending on the weaker subject). Please note that not everyone interviewed will be offered a place.

10+ ENTRY: Our 10+ deferred examination is for pupils in Year 5 at the time of the entrance assessments. It offers them the opportunity to secure an 11+ place a year early whilst continuing their primary education at their current school. Examination papers are taken in English and Mathematics. The Mathematics and English papers are broadly in line with age-appropriate National Curriculum levels. Those that perform strongly in all these papers will be invited for interview; however, not everyone interviewed will be offered a place.

13+ entry: There are up to 10 places available for 13+ entry. All 13+ candidates will sit examination papers in Mathematics and English in the November when they are in Year 8. The candidates who do well enough in the examinations will be invited for subject-based and general interviews. Places will be offered by the end of the Autumn term.

16+ entry: There are up to 50 places available for 16+ entry in September 2023. Once registered they will request a copy of the candidate’s most recent school report and a reference (from their current school) to include predicted GCSE grades. Candidates will be asked to complete a personal statement, further instructions on this will be sent to candidates once registered.In order to cope with the demands of an academically rigorous Sixth Form programme, students must have a sound base across all their GCSE or IGCSE subjects, and excel in those they wish to study at A Level or Pre-U. As a minimum, students must achieve at least grade 7 (equivalent to A grade) in four separate subjects. In addition, all students must achieve a minimum grade 6 (equivalent to a high B grade) in Mathematics and English GCSE or IGCSE. Please also note that a minimum of grade 7 is required in those subjects, or closely related subjects, that students wish to study for A Level or Pre-U with the exception of Mathematics where students will require a minimum grade 8 at GCSE and Further Mathematics where students will require a minimum grade 9 at GCSE.

Prospective Student Charges: 

  • Registration Fee £135
  • Acceptance Deposit £1,950

Termly Fees & Charges:

  • £7,395.00 per term, inclusive of stationery, text books and Personal Accident Insurance (incorporating Dental Cover)
  • Public Examinations - GCSE, IGCSE and A2 fees are chargeable in the year they are taken
  • KGS Parents & Staff Association (PSA) £5 per term, per family (parents may opt out)

Optional Charges:

  • Personal Effects Insurance £7.73 per term (2021/22)
  • AXA PPP Healthcare £126 per term (2021/22)
  • Fees Refund Scheme 1.37% of fees payable (2021/22)

Catering:

  • Lunch - optional £310 per term. (50% lunch charge is made for Fifth and Upper Sixth pupils in the Summer Term whilst on study leave). Lunch charge has been decreased to £210 for the Sixth Form due to the different offering in Hawkes.
  • Breakfast - Card charged on purchase. Served 7.30 - 8.30am
  • Morning Break - Card charged on purchase. Served 10.45am - 11.10am

Scholarships

Scholarships are currently available for Academic, Art, Music, Sport, Drama (16+ only) and Design Technology (16+ only). To be considered for a Kingston Grammar School Scholarship, the candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to, and enthusiasm for, their chosen scholarship and also be willing to contribute to the active life of the community. They must also satisfy the academic requirements as assessed in the school entrance examinations and interviews. 

  • ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS: At 11+, 13+ and 16+, Academic Scholarships are by invitation only. At 11+, those candidates who achieve a high standard  in their entrance examination will be invited to return to attend the Scholarship assessments. At 13+ and 16+, invitations will be sent based on performance in our entrance examination. All candidates sitting the scholarship examination will be invited for a series of interviews, more details of which will be given to the candidates at the scholarship examination.
  • ART SCHOLARSHIPS: At 11+, 13+ and 16+, a digital folder of artwork should be submitted in advance of the in-person assessment. A shortlist of candidates will be selected from these submissions and invited to attend a practical workshop. A folder of work should be brought on the day of workshop assessment. Art Scholars are selected based on an excellent folder of work, workshop and interview. 
  • MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships are awarded to those who show outstanding potential on an instrument, preferably orchestral. As a guide, candidates should have achieved a good pass at Grade 5 standard at age 11 and Grade 7 at 16. Ability to play a second instrument is desirable, though not essential. Auditions will consist of: Candidates will be asked to submit a video recording playing a piece on their main study. A shortlist of candidates will then be selected from these submissions and invited to an audition.
  • SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS: Sports scholarships are awarded to those who show outstanding potential in one or more sports. Following the entrance examination, selected pupils will attend an initial assessment day where they are assessed on movement, hand-eye co-ordination, as well as communication and leadership skills. There is then a second assessment, which is sport specific and will allow pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their skill and aptitude in a variety of sports offered. Applicants at 13+ and 16+ are also able to express their interest in a scholarship and will be assessed on an individual basis depending on their chosen sports. Assessment will take place during the second half of the Autumn term.
