Welcome to the Lady Manners School website which is designed to give a feel for life at our school and is also a source of information about the many activities that they offer. We update the site regularly and hope that it is relevant and easy to use. If you have any ideas for additions or improvements please do let us know.Lady Manners School is forward looking and we are also proud of our history. The school was founded in 1636 by Grace, Lady Manners. Since then it has moved sites and has occupied its current position since 1936, overlooking Bakewell in the heart of the Peak District. Today we have more than 1300 students studying the widest range of subjects that we have ever had.
Facilities
Key Stage 3
All students follow a common curriculum in Year 7, providing full coverage of the National Curriculum. Students have lessons in Maths, English, Science, Design Technology (including Food Technology), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), History, Geography, Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education, a Modern Foreign Language and Religious Education (RE), Personal Development (including Relationships, Sex and Health Educations (RSHE), Careers and Citizenship). The opportunity to study a second modern foreign language is also introduced during Key Stage 3. Further choice and flexibility is introduced in Year 9, and in some subjects accredited GCSE and NVQ courses begin.
Key Stage 4
In order to meet the needs, interests and aspirations of individual students in Years 10 and 11, the core of compulsory courses is reduced; choice and diversity are expanded. All students continue to study English, maths, science, PE, Personal Development and choices from the EBacc suite of subjects. In addition there is a wide range of GCSEs, vocational and applied options such as BTEC.
Sixth Form
They have a large, dynamic Sixth Form with highly committed staff and students. There is a wide range of courses available which offer challenge, breadth, depth and flexibility of experience.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
Lady Manners School is a fully inclusive school. All students have access to a broad and balanced curriculum, including the National Curriculum, extra-curricular activities and the wider life of the school. The school provides a learning community which takes into account the needs of individuals and where all individuals are valued, can feel secure and can have a sense of belonging. The emphasis is to maximise achievement, realise individual potential, raise self-esteem, promote well-being and prepare young people for the challenges of life in a complex, changing society.
Music
Lady Manners School has a long and proud musical tradition and this is reflected in the wealth of extra-curricular music activities on offer. During their time at Lady Manners, students can start in groups such as Beginner Band or the Junior Girls’ and Boys’ Choirs. More experienced musicians have the chance to join the String Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra or LMS Chorale to name just three. Some groups have even had the opportunity for foreign travel, such as the music trip to Germany.
Sport
The extra-curricular sporting offering is vast with clubs and teams for all ages and abilities. Sports such as netball, football and, if you have a horse, our equestrian team are some of what is on offer and are hugely popular with students. Non-competition fitness options are available, for instance in our fitness sessions.
House Activities
House competitions take place throughout the year so that students can compete to win valuable house-points. There are lots of different house events throughout the year, from sports competitions to spelling bees and enterprise afternoons.
