Lichfield Cathedral School

Description

Lichfield Cathedral School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 2 to 18 (Gender - 2 to 18 )

Lichfield Cathedral School is a flourishing coeducational independent day school in Staffordshire for ages 21/2 to 18. The school community is based on core values of learning, faith, leadership and service, whose purpose is to educate and inspire young people to become confident, enthusiastic and responsible members of society. The staff help pupils and students to find their particular strengths and hone them to a peak, whilst areas that need development are supported. The ambition is to ensure that your son or daughter leaves them at the end of their school career as a confident and articulate young person, with the capacity to lead and the ability to work as part of team. In simple terms they want them to fill their own wings and take their own individual flight path. They foster a sense of responsibility and understanding, encouraging pupils and students to recognise the part they have to play in the world on a local and an international scale.  To this end, pupils of all ages benefit from the school's accredited Ethical Leadership course instilling an essential knowledge of 'what is right' in the minds of the future leaders. For some pupils top flight academic universities will beckon, medals and representative honours in sport for others, whilst there will be others still who will produce great art, drama or music that will feed the soul.

Facilities

Nursery, Pre-Reception & Reception
In Early Years we make the most of the beautiful rural setting and many activities are planned as part of outdoor learning, offering the children an exciting environment in which to explore and investigate. The Nursery, Pre-Reception and Reception years are based in bespoke purpose-built classrooms within the main Junior School building, with their own Forest School gardens, kitchen facilities and outdoor play areas. The Early Years Foundation Stage is an exciting part of a child’s learning journey and they aim to support, promote and develop children’s growing understanding and abilities through a wide range of activities and experiences. We recognise that children learn in many different ways and at different rates. It is also very important that children have the time and appropriate opportunities for free play. This enables them to pursue and develop their own interests and to consolidate their learning. The small classes and high staff pupil ratios enable us to get to know the children very well and provide a secure, safe, happy and engaging environment in which to learn.

Juniors
Set in six acres of beautiful countryside, the Longdon site provides a happy and purposeful introduction to school life for boys and girls. The self-contained campus has been thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of this age group and the children quickly settle in the bright and cheerful surroundings.Academic standards throughout the school are high and the challenging curriculum has been carefully planned to provide strong educational foundations. With small classes, high staff ratios and learning support available where needed, each child can happily work to extend their ability, developing essential skills in reading, writing and mathematics and enjoying an early introduction to languages.

Seniors
They have high academic expectations and they encourage pupils to be ambitious in their academic aims. This ambition extends beyond the accumulation of strong GCSE and A Level grades. We believe we are training children for life by encouraging the desire to sustain learning beyond the school environment. They hope and expect our pupils to maintain that attitude at university and for the rest of their lives.Underpinning the curriculum is the philosophy that happy pupils relish new challenges and are always excited to learn new things. We believe in reward and encouragement, and they ensure pupils are aware of the progress they are making. The Director of Studies works with subject teachers to ensure consistently high standards of teaching - one of the main aspects of the school most highly regarded by our parents. Differentiation is built into every lesson, ensuring that the content, structure, activities and any relevant homework all take account of different abilities and different learning styles.

Things to note

Sport
The superb grounds of the School, set against the magnificent backdrop of Lichfield Cathedral, provide an inspirational setting for a multitude of sporting activities. All children participate in structured curriculum PE lessons, receiving above the nationally expected 2 hours per week from Year 3 upwards. Games activities follow the major games of rugby, football and cricket for the boys and hockey, netball and rounders for girls. Music
“The school has excellent music provision; pupils of all ages can participate in a wide range of choirs and ensembles, and in a school orchestra…. Pupils demonstrate excellent achievement in the creative areas such as music, with high quality musical achievement evident in choirs, many ensembles and the work of the choristers in the cathedral.”They have a long heritage of musical excellence and we are proud to be one of 44 cathedral schools delivering outstanding music education. Music helps bind pupils into the wider life of the School through a combination of classroom teaching, instrumental and vocal tuition, playing together in ensembles and orchestras, the chance to learn from professional musicians and multiple opportunities for performance.

Drama
Drama creates an inspirational environment where pupils have the freedom to express their individualism and ever-increasing emotional, intellectual and physical maturity. Throughout the drama process pupils will develop confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and communication skills. Drama lessons not only provide subject specific knowledge and drama skills, but also enable pupils to develop personhood on a social, moral and spiritual level.Drama teachers often collaborate with other subjects, such as French, to explore concepts, values, emotions and attitudes – to hold up the human experience for scrutiny and help pupils make sense of the world and their place in it.

LAMDA
The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art Examinations (LAMDA) offers practical communication and performance assessments and provides each learner with the skills and the confidence to succeed in life by developing attributes such as self-confidence and the ability to communicate clearly and present ideas.LAMDA is one of the UK’s oldest (130+ years) and most respected awarding bodies. LAMDA qualifications are about achievement – recognising and rewarding the endeavours of each individual – but they are also about empowerment.

Clubs
Great importance is placed on balancing academic work with interests and achievements outside the classroom and every pupil is encouraged to become fully involved in School life, to challenge themselves and to try something new. This involvement helps to produce interesting, well-rounded individuals who will contribute to society in life beyond school. The activities on offer change each term and reflect both the interests of our pupils and the staff.
