Parmiter's School

Description

Parmiter's School is leading State Secondary school in Watford. This is a Non-selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Mixed

The school has its origins in the 1681 Will of Thomas Parmiter, silk merchant.  In his last testament he left property to endow six almshouses and "one free school house or room" in Bethnal Green, London.  From small beginnings the school grew over the years into a thriving boys’ grammar school.  In 1977, the Trustees of the Parmiter’s School Foundation took the decision to move Parmiter's to its present location in Garston where it established as an all-ability, co-educational school. The school has the financial support of the Parmiter's School Foundation Charity whose resources are dedicated to the enhancement of educational provision for Parmiter's students in the spirit of Thomas Parmiter's original bequest.

Facilities

Years 7, 8 & 9
In Years 7 to 9, all students follow a curriculum designed to develop a rich knowledge base and broad range of skills.  Each department offers a relevant, balanced and engaging curriculum that provides the foundations for further study.

Years 10 & 11
In Years 10 & 11, students follow a curriculum designed to prepare them for GCSE examinations and post-16 opportunities.  Our curriculum includes compulsory (core) and optional elements.  Our core curriculum subjects are: English Language; English Literature; Mathematics; the Sciences; a Modern Foreign Language.  We are committed to offering a broad range of optional GCSE subjects so students can pursue their areas of interest.  In contrast to some schools, we do not currently prescribe that all students study the suite of subjects required to fulfil the EBacc; we believe this allows students to pursue their areas of interest and strength in their examined subjects.

Years 12 & 13 (Sixth Form)
Parmiter’s offers an extensive academic Sixth Form curriculum, with over 20 different A Level subjects offered.  All A Level subjects are taught as two year linear courses.  Alongside their A Level subjects, students attend an introductory programme of Study Skills sessions which leads to an opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).  This well respected qualification allows students to further pursue a particular area of interest and develop skills that are directly relevant to and useful for university-level study.

Sixth Form
Most Parmiterians continue their journey from Year 11 into our exceptional Sixth Form and many new students join the school to undertake their A Level studies. As with the transition from Primary school, new students bond quickly with their peers and immediately become members of the Parmiter’s family. Sixth Form focuses on the transition from school to adult life, whether that is a move to university, an apprenticeship or the world of work. Parmiter’s offers a distinct enrichment programme that enables students to learn from experienced professionals from a number of the UK’s major institutions.
