Royal Grammar School Worcester

Description

RGS Worcester is one of the leading independent day schools in the West Midlands providing the best private education in Worcestershire. They offer an outstanding, broad education to pupils from 11-18 years of age, with an extensive range of opportunities both in their studies and in their co-curricular experience of school life, and exceptional pastoral care.

Facilities

Crowds measured in their thousands watch the annual First Team Rugby, Football and Netball fixtures with local friends and rivals King’s School at Worcester’s Sixways Stadium and Indoor Arena respectively. The new state of the art hockey pitches at the Worcester International Hockey Centre allows to host County and Regional Hockey tournaments and they also have at disposal the floodlit AstroTurf at RGS The Grange. There are exciting plans for future facility development at RGS, including an indoor tennis and netball centre that will provide another fantastic indoor facility to add to the existing indoor facilities of Cobham Hall and Tom Savage Hall.

Features

Things to note

  • There is a tangible sense of excitement and involvement in musical performance at RGS. Students from all year groups have the chance to perform solos at informal year group Tea-Time Concerts each year as well as in series of ‘Perrins Sessions’ films. The Big Band and Senior Jazz group put on regular concerts of their own: over recent years, ‘Christmas with the Big Band’ and the Cabaret Evening have proved particularly popular crowd-pleasers, offering a chance for senior solo vocalists to sing with a full Big Band.
  • They have an annual Senior School production performed at the end of the Michaelmas term: recent highly acclaimed successes include ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Phantom of the Opera’. In the Lent term, it is the turn of own theatre company, the DIY Theatre Company. Members are Drama Scholars who also run their own budget and have responsibility for all aspects of the production.
  • As well as attending talks by practising artists and designers, museum and gallery visits in the UK are a regular part of the courses that they offer from Year Eight upwards. Most evenings after school the Art Department is busy with pupils attending on an ‘open all hours’ basis but there are specific extra-curricular opportunities such as the biennial Year Eight trip to Oxford museums, weekly enrichment courses available for Sixth Form artists and non-artists and the Extended Project Qualification for Sixth Formers in an aspect of History of Art.
  • RGS Worcester organises many major overseas sports tours which give the pupils an opportunity to play against some of the best sports schools across the world and to experience a variety of cultures, enriching the pupils’ sport and experience work. In 2022, the boys will be going on a Rugby Tour to Canada whilst the Hockey and Netball teams are visiting Barbados.
  • For over 100 years, RGS has offered the opportunity for pupils to develop their personal skills in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). An RGS cadet is supported in the improvement of self-discipline and self-confidence through participation in the myriad of activities that are available.
  • The pupils learn resilience and self-sufficiency as they take on physical challenges and experience the outdoors in weekend expeditions from the Malverns or North Wales to sea-kayaking in the Shetlands or Sweden and trekking in the Himalayas.
  • There are over 40 clubs and societies at RGS Worcester ranging from Astronomy to Wind Band. Pupils enjoy busy lunchtimes and after school sessions exploring new interests or developing their understanding of existing ones. CLICK HERE for more information.
  • Debating is very successful at RGS Worcester with pairs making it through to the prestigious Oxford or Cambridge Finals and winning Regional Champions for the West in the English Speaking Union Mace competition amongst other successes. Over one hundred students debate at RGS Worcester with the Seniors in action in university-run competitions from Cambridge to Durham.
