St. Anselm’s College is the Roman Catholic Grammar School for Boys in Wirral. They are a high performing Academy which enables them to focus upon the strategic priorities whilst retaining our Catholic ethos and grammar school identity. The vision is to educate a generation of confident leaders and good citizens equipped with the attributes and qualifications required to represent our Christian values in modern society and prepared for rewarding and productive lives. In March 2019 the Inspector from the Diocese of Shrewsbury described St. Anselm’s as “a good Roman Catholic Grammar School with many outstanding features.” The students are active in supporting the Christian Brothers’ Mission in Sierra Leone, West Africa and our 6th Form Immersion groups have previously visited our twin school, St. Francis, Makeni and related projects and will return there in the future. Students regularly support local adults with learning difficulties at the Friday Club and assist at Homeless Missions and in Special Schools.
KS3
Students study a broad, balanced and ambitious Key Stage 3 curriculum for all. The curriculum is not narrowed and all subjects enjoy parity. The curriculum is designed to give students the necessary knowledge in each subject area, so they are equipped to commence to GCSE and A-Level studies. It also aims to develop the whole person, creating students who are responsible citizens with strong moral values. The Year 7 curriculum is designed to create a smooth transition from our partner primary schools and the Key Stage delivers the statutory National Curriculum requirements.
KS4
All students study at least 9 subjects at GCSE (with some students accessing 10 or 11 subjects) sitting examinations in the summer of Year 11. The following are compulsory non-examined subjects studied by all students: Citizenship, PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education) including Sex and Relationship Education, PE (Physical Education), Games
KS5
All students progressing to Sixth Form study at the College will be offered a highly ambitious curriculum. The majority of Year 12 students study 3 subjects of their choice as well as various enrichment activities. All Year 12 students take part in Games and they also have one lesson of general Religious Studies each week alongside study support/enrichment. In Year 13, students continue A-Level study and some may also submit an Extended Project. Year 13 students also benefit from a weekly lesson in Religious Studies and the weekly games session becomes a voluntary activity.
Extra Curricular Life
Undertaking extracurricular activities has far-ranging benefits that touch on many aspects of student development. Fundamentally, extra-curricular activities allow students to learn something that could stay with them for a lifetime. Directly, that skill could be the basis of a hobby or passion that enriches their life for many years. Everything from playing sports to learning an instrument could lead to hours spent doing something they enjoy. Beyond that, extra-curricular activities develop skills that can be helpful in other walks of life. Using the same examples, sports are key to developing teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. A musical instrument requires perseverance, hand-eye coordination and, above all, creativity. These are skills that provide continued benefits long after education is completed. A lot of the skills that lie at the heart of extra-curricular activities can be used during core academic subjects. Education requires solid problem-solving skills, memory, creativity, and critical thinking. To varying degrees, you can find an extracurricular activity that has an impact on these areas. Research has been carried out that develops a link between extra-curricular participation and better academic performance.
