Pupils at St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School have a distinguished tradition of achieving academic excellence.The curriculum we provide reflects pupils’ own interests and we encourage them to develop strategies for personalised and independent learning from a very early age. The curriculum provides breadth and depth and allows pupils to choose subjects that reflect their own strengths. Outstanding teaching and learning ensure pupils are supported both in the classroom and beyond, to achieve their full academic potential. The provision as a centre of excellence for Gifted and Talented pupils has an outstanding reputation, with pupils making progress throughout their time in school. They have excellent links with our partner primary schools, other local secondary schools and various different universities and colleges. They understand that learning can take place in so many different situations both in and beyond the classroom.
ENRICHMENT
Opportunities for learning beyond the classroom are extensive. We have excellent facilities for Art, Drama, Music and sporting clubs with an active Duke of Edinburgh Programme. We offer both entitlement and enrichment activities to all our pupils, including several residential trips each year. Subject areas also organise visits to support and extend learning including trips to New York, France, Spain, Italy, PGL and Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions around the UK. St Bernard's have achieved sporting excellence at local and county level.
SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS
St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School is committed to upholding its Mission in relation to students who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The school has a number of students with a range of diagnosed conditions and a highly-effective SEND team which offers specialist individual and group support. In line with the school policy and the Children and Families Act 2014 (Code of Conduct), these students are supported in classrooms by their normal subject teachers, who are trained in appropriate strategies by the school’s SENCo. A small number of students have a Specialist SEN Teaching assistant as part of their Statement of Special Educational Need (soon to be Education, Health and Care Plan -EHCP).
