Features

Things to note

  • St Catherine’s runs a wide range of trips and visits within the UK and abroad, for all girls in the Prep and Senior School. Exciting trips programme reflects the adventurous outlook of staff and pupils as well as supporting the learning taking place within the classroom.
  • St Catherine’s Debating Society is held on Thursdays at lunchtime and is a popular co-curricular activity. The school runs a House Debating Competition and the students compete in national debating competitions.
  • Extra-curricular Drama is extremely popular at St Catherine’s. In recent years they have put on The Lion King, Sister Act and Bring It On! The main school production, performed in the Spring Term, is open to all girls from Year 7 to Year 13. Pupils make up the cast, the backstage crew, the costume designers and the technical crew, so there is a chance for girls to get involved in elements that interest them.
  • Music plays a significant role at St Catherine’s and there are many ways for the girls to get involved with music outside of lesson time. There are whole school concerts and informal concerts throughout the year.
  • Students achieve notable success in sport across a broad range of activities: hockey, netball, swimming, hockey, trampolining, athletics, biathlon, equestrian and cross-country.

Selection Criteria: Selective

Admission Details

ADMISSION TO THE PREP SCHOOL: Parents and families are warmly invited to attend one of the many Open mornings or informal Welcome events, or if you would prefer, they would be pleased to arrange a personal visit and the opportunity to meet the Head of Prep and other key staff. Parents should then register for a place in Prep, after which arrangements will be made for a prospective pupil visit, and for older girls, age appropriate literacy and numeracy assessments. Where relevant, parents are also asked to provide school reports and a reference from their daughter’s current school.

TRANSITION TO THE SENIOR SCHOOL: The move to the Senior School is the next step for Year 6 girls and is seen as a natural progression. They each have an automatic place in the Senior School as they are already part of the St Catherine’s family. The entrance tests taken in January simply provide a valuable experience for the girls, and information to assist with scholarship offers and setting in core subjects.

ADMISSION TO YEAR 7: Registration for Year 7 2023 entry is now open; the deadline for applications is Tuesday 15 November (noon). Year 7 (or 11+) is the key admission point at St Catherine’s. All applicants will be invited to complete entrance examinations in Maths and English on December 3; this will be followed by a welcome talk for parents, from the Headmistress. Alternatively, if you require more information in advance, please email at [email protected]. Upon receipt of your application and registration fee, you will receive an information pack including a date and time for your interview slot.

ADMISSION TO THE SENIOR SCHOOL: Applicants take one-hour papers in Mathematics and English. All papers are designed to bring out the skills and potential of each candidate, regardless of the curriculum emphasis in her current school. Places are offered on the basis of performance in the examination; a report and reference from the girl’s current school; and an informal interview with the Headmistress, for parents and prospective pupils. The emphasis in this process is on welcoming families who seek the community life of St Catherine’s and girls willing to offer their gifts and talents to the School.

ADMISSION TO THE SIXTH FORM: Pupils currently in Year 11 at St Catherine’s do not need to apply to join the Sixth Form. They each have an automatic place. Pupils wishing to study in the Sixth Form at St Catherine’s usually achieve six GCSEs at grades 6-9, including a grade 4 in Maths and English. They generally gain a grade 7 in the subjects they wish to study at A Level; however, if a student is close to this level and shows aptitude and willingness in other ways, entry can be discussed with the Headmistress.

Tuition fees by year group:

  • Year 1 to Year2: £4,180
  • Year 3 to Year 6: £4,410
