Senior School
Years 7 - 11, All the children are on the path to GCSE, but the journeys they take are different and, to the greatest possible extent, tailored to the needs of each child. The key philosophy is that, even when exams are in prospect, we never lose sight of making learning fun. The key reassurance is that at Stoke there is always a friend to talk to or a teacher to explain something. Class sizes are small and we will sometimes stream (especially in Maths) into sets of just four or five.Year 7 marks the commencement of a faster pace of learning and the introduction of discrete subjects and a homework timetable to match. Until Year 9 we try to maintain the broadest range of subjects we can for every child: Maths, English, a humanities and languages cycle of Geography, History, Spanish and French, Art & Design (including Design and Technology), Creative Arts (Music and Drama) and Food Technology too. They are very proud of our STEM teaching and we progress from general Science in Year 7 towards Chemistry, Biology and Physics taught by subject specialists by Year 9.
Sixth Form
Stoke College Sixth Form is a Sixth Form like no other. They not only want our students to succeed academically, but we want them to have a global outlook. The job as a school is to push each and every student just a little bit further than they thought themselves capable of. Our inspirational teachers will guide you through your courses to achieve the highest grades possible. Most of our students sit three A Levels and submit an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). For those aspiring to Oxbridge or Ivy League, we may recommend four A Levels and the EPQ, depending on your area of specialism. Other students may choose to study two A Levels, the EPQ and also the ECDL, a practical computing qualification, to provide them with enough recognised qualifications to secure a University place. At the core of the Sixth Form is our Global Competencies Diploma. This unique diploma, designed by us, will equip our Sixth Formers with the skills they need to succeed in a global world. The diploma has a strong international outlook and all pupils learn international languages (Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian), UK and international politics, ethical and sustainable leadership and global economics. We also offer the chance for a two week cultural visit to China. They focus on life skills such as environmental awareness, financial management, work experience and healthy lifestyles.
Learning Development
It’s not just Richard Branson who says 40% of the world’s millionaires are dyslexic. The data is now clear that learning ‘difficulties’ often correlate with unexpected perspectives and striking abilities. The Learning Development Centre, located at the heart of the old school building, is staffed by a wonderful team of teachers with vast experience of all kinds of learning challenges, from formally diagnosed disorders to recognised weaknesses which need a little extra time and attention.
Outside the Classroom
Stoke College is blessed with a beautiful parkland campus and plenty of space, not just for outdoor team sports (rugby, football, cricket, hockey) but for walking and talking with friends, for fishing and boating in the summer. They are building a new outdoor classroom to ensure that all our students are able to spend time outdoors. They are developing a new programme of outdoor experiential learning introducing themes around ecology and nature. The largest building is the Gym, where basketball and badminton feature prominently The athletes in the Senior School do circuit training at lunch time, in the new Weights Room, in addition to Games twice weekly and they are immensely proud of the batch of cross country runners they have right now.
Selection Criteria: Selective
Every child who applies is invited to join us for a taster day, which will include a short informal interview with Dr Lloyd. The taster days are a great opportunity for your child (and you) to get to know us a bit better. They believe that joining a school is a two-way process; you need to interview them as much as they need to interview you!
