At the Avenue Pre-Preparatory School and Nursery a rich and stimulating variety of activities is provided to all children, plus a strong and effective academic programme, including regular trips off site to places of interest enabling each child to fulfil his/her potential in a stimulating and exciting environment. Music, Dance, Drama, Swimming and French are taught by specialists.
Pre-Nursery
They are guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and wherever possible we extend children beyond the average expectations for their age. The educational focus is on structured play but includes first steps in Literacy and numeracy in addition to laying the basic foundations for other areas of learning. In this way Nursery plays a vital part in preparing girls and boys for their future school years.
Nursery
Over the course of the year, children begin to learn to read using a well established phonics programme. Letters and sounds are introduced to small groups of children on a regular basis during the week so that by the end of the Nursery year, some children will already have begun to read while others will be preparing to begin. Numeracy is also introduced to small groups of children with the emphasis on practical numeracy activities.Various topics are planned and resourced to cover festivals, events and other interesting and relevant subjects. We incorporate a more structured and adult led approach to introduce new ideas and topics, extend children’s understanding, encourage acceptable behaviour, improve children’s concentration, and promote sharing and taking turns and developing relationships.
Reception
In Reception, more formal schoolwork begins, preparing your child for Key Stage One. Children are supported and challenged to reach their full potential in all areas, both academic and personal. We celebrate each child’s individual achievements and encourage the development of self-confidence and respect for others.Much of the teaching is topic based and cross-curricular and includes Science, History, Geography, French, Music and ICT. Great emphasis is given to literacy, numeracy and communication skills. Our thorough teaching of phonics will ensure your child makes excellent progress with the majority of children exceeding the Early Learning Goals at the end of Reception.Children attend school for a full day and are taught in small class sizes by enthusiastic, skilled class teachers while specialist teachers are employed to teach music, drama, French, PE and swimming.
Year 1
The Curriculum is broadened and extended in Year 1 to include Geography, History, RE and Science. Great emphasis is placed upon developing reading, writing and arithmetical skills in order prepare fully for the Assessments to various schools in Year 2. These core subjects are taught by Class Teachers, supported by Classroom Assistants with other members of our QTS staff teaching Science, Geography, History, RE and PSHE
Year 2
The school follows, but is not restricted by, the English National Curriculum. In Year 2 the curriculum embraces the core subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Science with great emphasis placed upon developing reading, writing and mathematical skills. We take the children throughout the year on stimulating educational school trips. These reinforce areas of learning and the enthusiasm it can bring to a topic is immeasurable.I.C.T. is used throughout the curriculum in all subjects and every classroom is equipped with Interactive Whiteboards.
Art Programme
At the Avenue Art is seen as a crucial part of a student's overall academic development. Pupils learn to use a wide range of materials to design and construct creatively through the Avenue's art programme. Drawing, painting and sculpture are explored and children are encouraged to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. The works of a range of artists and designers are presented each term and children are encouraged to develop their skills of observation and make links to their own work.
Sports Programme
At the Avenue, Sport is an integral part of our curriculum. Our sports programme includes weekly PE sessions, swimming and daily playground activities. We also offer seasonal lessons in a variety of areas including dance, tennis and football. Participating in sports helps to develop children’s health and contributes to their psychological and social development. Sport has also been shown to have a direct result on a child’s academic development with even moderate activity shown to improve a child’s memory and their reading and arithmetic skills.
Drama Programme
At the Avenue we see Drama and performing arts as a key tool in preparing the children for their life ahead. Dramatic play helps children understand their world around them and draw parallels to real-life situations. Drama further helps a child improve their communication skills and explore their own identity. Through fictional situations the children develop their creative thinking and problem solving as well as increasing their empathy.
Music Programme
At the Avenue, Music is at the forefront of our curriculum and is regarded by us as the foundation of all learning. At the end of each year, the children stage a music presentation where the choir and all the string players preform for the parents and staff. They are joined by invited professional players and singers who preform alongside the children.
