The Christian School (Takeley) is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 16 (Gender - 3 to 16 )
They are a small independent school in Essex founded by a group of parents and friends in 1989 to provide a Christian education, fostering Christian faith and values. Today the school includes families from a wide geographical area, who belong to a number of different churches or none. Small numbers in classes mean that every child receives a high level of attention and individual encouragement to do their best. The ethos encourages a real sense of community and the family nature of the school means that children can be themselves in a safe and accepting environment where pupils and staff work together.Formed from a community, the school was started by a group of parents and some of their friends who wanted to take responsibility for educating their children. Even the fabric of the buildings bears witness to the commitment of this initial group of people who renovated the buildings on the site.A sense of community is still a key feature of the school. Parents are encouraged to be involved and opportunities for staff, pupils and parents to work together and to pray together help underpin our family ethos.
Junior School
In the Junior school, the pupils are divided into two classes – Lower Juniors (Years 3 and 4) and Upper Juniors (years 5 and 6) – each with their own class teacher. There is some mixing of the two groups for certain subjects and both groups benefit from subject specialist teachers for some of their lessons. The Junior School is contained within its own building which is a bright and airy space consisting of a large open classroom and a mezzanine level. The primary children learn together from a rich curriculum that includes: English, maths, project and science, music, art, horticulture, French, Spanish, PE, and PSHEE are also taught. They take the children swimming each week at a local pool. Every child has the option to learn to play the recorder and as they get older the ukulele as part of the primary school curriculum. They encourage all our pupils to love music and take private lessons in other instruments if they can. We currently offer private lessons for those who are interested in learning piano.
Senior School
Y7 to Y11 are taught by specialist teachers in classes with a maximum size of 12 pupils, except for PE where larger groups are an advantage. Y7 to Y9 are the Lower Seniors. Y10 and Y11 are the Upper Seniors. Pupils are taught for the most part in their separate year groups with some lessons mixing two year groups. In KS4 almost all students will take GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, two or more Science qualifications, a modern foreign language and Religious Studies. Pupils can supplement these core GCSEs with subjects chosen from Geography, History, a second Modern Foreign Language, Level 2 Further Maths, all three Science subjects, Music and Art. Computer Science is taught throughout KS4 and pupils may take a GCSE in this subject.
Sports Education
They make use of local sports areas to allow us to include a variety of sports and athletics across the age range. Pupils are taught by a PE specialist who joins us one day a week. Primary, Y7 and Y8 pupils have weekly swimming lessons at the Great Dunmow Leisure Centre throughout the year.
Trips
Most years we run a residential trip for Y6 – Y9 pupils where they have the opportunity to try a range of outdoor activities such as rock climbing, team building tasks and canoeing.
Careers Education in the Secondary School
Careers education and guidance is an important part of the educational experience at The Christian School Takeley. We aim to deliver careers guidance that is impartial, confidential and based on the needs of individual pupils. They understand that our pupils have a variety of interests and skills which need to be cultivated to ensure that they can pursue relevant career options so our policy is to support, encourage and enable pupils to make informed choices and transitions related to their personal, educational and career aspirations. The secondary school careers programme is comprehensive and underpinned by the GATSBY benchmarks and guidance from the Department of Education.
Home Educators and Flexible-Time Educators
The school is happy to work with Home Educators and pupils with outside school specialisms and to allow a measure of Home Education where it can be demonstrated that the education being provided is effective, supervised appropriately and follows Safeguarding procedures.
