The Hertfordshire and Essex High School and Science College is a State Secondary school for kids aged 11 to 16 (Gender - Mix )
The choice of secondary school is a critical one. Substantial evidence indicates that girls achieve their best in a single-sex environment. Throughout its first century, Herts & Essex has provided outstanding education for girls aged 11 to 18 and for boys aged 16 to 18. In the twenty-first century we continue to combine the strengths of a single-sex girls´ school with an innovative and dynamic approach, responding to the demands of a rapidly changing world. The mission statement is: Excellence for All, encapsulating the philosophy that they deliver a personalised high quality experience for every student. They believe that the students will be leaders in whichever field of work, academic study or indeed personal interests they choose in their future. The dedicated staff work together to provide plentiful opportunities for each individual to develop the leadership skills, knowledge and qualities they will need in order to play a significant role in the complex world beyond school. They aim to stimulate and challenge students academically, and each student is encouraged to succeed in any career they choose. Past students have entered the professional fields of medicine, law, education, banking, politics, media, art, ICT and the sciences. Many of the students who join us now will be preparing for jobs that do not even exist today. It is crucial therefore that they help them develop a passion for learning and a breadth of skills
Curriculum Intent
They provide an exceptional education for all students, regardless of prior attainment, disadvantage or special educational need.
All students make impressive progress through an ambitious, broad and inspirational curriculum.
The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that students build the key knowledge and skills to succeed in each subject.
The curriculum reflects our school values enabling students to build resilience and creativity, learn to respect and show compassion for others, understand how to use their initiative and build independence.
Students are given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of subjects in the Lower School before refining their educational pathway; they can then choose from an extensive range of qualifications in the Upper School and Sixth Form.
The E-Bacc is promoted as a broad, balanced curriculum in the upper school and is pursued by the majority of students.
Where E-bacc is not appropriate for students, they are given advice and guidance on their curriculum choices and alternative pathways that are right for each individual are followed.
An extensive co-curricular programme is accessible to all a students, including sport, the performing arts and all levels of Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Arts Award.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Herts & Essex the approach to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is to provide a personalised programme of support for students regardless of their age or ability. Wherever possible students are provided with in-class support, allowing them to continue with the national curriculum and public examination subject specification.Students are supported by a proactive, experienced and dedicated team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), who liaise closely with both the Learning Manager for SEND and classroom teachers. The LSAs build positive, supportive relationships with students, in order to promote independent learning and to encourage them to become achieving individuals who do not allow their SEND to hinder their goals or aspirations. All students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) are appointed an LSA as their key worker, with whom they meet when they have concerns or problems. Students can also meet directly with the Learning Manger for SEND when necessary.
Co-curricular Activities
Students don’t stop learning when they leave the classroom; we passionately believe that interests can be fostered and even discovered with our exciting range of co-curricular activities. Multisports sessions happen every day at 15:00 Monday to Thursday for students in Years 7 to 11. These activities and clubs, coupled with an extensive trips and visits programme enrich the curriculum. They range from team sports to science clubs, from musical theatre to enterprise, from board games to dance as well as many more. Each year the whole school gets involved in Activities Week, when the timetable is suspended to allow students to participate in large scale events which support their all-round development. For Year 7 and Year 9 students the week involves residential and day trips and activities both here and abroad. The Year 8 students have a week that focuses on careers and the Year 10 students spend the week doing work experience. Year 12 students spend week focussing on the future, familiarising themselves with the UCAS process, learning about what opportunities are on offer both in education and the world of work.
