The Stable school is a unique and special school set within the beautiful St Catherine’s hill area in Christchurch, Dorset. The school is surrounded by nature and quiet calm spaces.
The Stable school specialises in working with children and young people with social, emotional and mental health barriers to learning. Children will require an EHCP to be referred to the school and referrals are usually made through the Local Authority. They prioritise the wellbeing and mental health of all learners and adopt a curriculum that mirrors the national curriculum whilst ensuring opportunities for therapeutic support.

The Stable school was founded in 2019 by 2 teachers who wanted to create an education system that didn’t try to put square pegs into round holes. The Stable school is a supportive family who celebrates that each child is individual and unique. They adopt a trauma informed and psychoeducational approach to support young people with social, emotional and mental health barriers to learning.

Things to note
The curriculum is designed around and for pupils. It is flexible enough to allow for individual needs but has a robust core that ensures set pupils up for the best life chances possible. They ensure that we mirror the national curriculum through a psychoeducational approach to learning. Teaching approach and curriculum is designed to raise aspirations and support social mobility.
The link between being physically active and the impact on mental wellbeing is well researched and documented and as such sport and physical activity is a high priority at The Stable school. Pupils have the opportunity to surf, box, ski, paddleboard, horse ride, rock climb as well as regular formal PE sessions mirroring the national curriculum. They have trained mountain bike instructors on teaching team who combine mountain biking with ELSA sessions. They also encourage walking on the neighbouring St Catherine’s hill nature reserve as both a form of exercise and mental well-being focus.
