Twyford School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 2 to 13 (Gender - 2 to 13 )
Twyford is a very special school. They put the happiness and fulfilment of each and every child at the centre of all they do. They recognise that every child has unique gifts and we believe that the overtly positive and encouraging educational environment which exists at Twyford enables our pupils to flourish and thrive. They are a school that is ambitious but supportive, challenging but nurturing, forward thinking but proud of our 200 year history. They have established strong relationships with the very best independent schools in the country. They pride ourselves on guiding every child in our care to the right next step and in the process manage the applications and prepare them thoroughly for pre-testing. The pupils have achieved remarkable results, with many winning coveted and wide-ranging scholarships along the way.
THE PREP DAY
We like to go that little bit further to make every day memorable. It’s the big game of hide and seek on a Summer’s evening, a visit to the Headmaster when you’ve achieved something to be proud of (to collect your SUG), the all in game of Court cricket at break time. It’s cooking a favourite meal in the great outdoors, getting your hands dirty in the woods, the chance for every Year 8 pupil to take responsibility and feel recognised. They work hard to ensure that every child feels included and part of the spirit of School life through our House system which offers regular opportunities for children to participate in sports and activities, earning valuable House points in the process. Belonging to a House is great fun, creating a sense of loyalty and helps children develop the skills and co-operation to work together. The House system also gives all members of Year 8 opportunities for leadership.
NURSERY
The Nursery is the very first step into the Twyford education and sets the scene for our youngest pupils to thrive during their most precious early years. They have two Nursery classes, Little Acorns for our 2-3 year olds and Oaks for the 3-4 year olds. The Nursery pupils are powerful learners, where their experience and sense of feeling loved and cared for is at the heart of how we operate. Our Nursery setting is rich in language, active learning, exploration, creativity and child-initiated play. Pupils are encouraged to think critically, develop their independence and celebrate the tiny steps as well as the giant leaps. Each class has their own free flow Nursery garden enabling all aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage to be accessed inside and out.
MUSIC & DRAMA
Music is part of the fabric of School life and at Twyford our Music Department is extremely well resourced with numerous teaching rooms and a large rehearsal studio. With a wide range of orchestras, bands, choirs and instrumental ensembles at the School, pupils of all ages and abilities can be involved. Every pupil from Nursery to Year 8 has a weekly class music lesson and a weekly singing practice; 80% of pupils also choose to have individual lessons with over 300 lessons in progress each week. There are usually one or two children each year that achieve 7 or grade 8 on their instruments and Music Scholarships are achieved each year to senior schools. They take great care to perform music appropriate to the children’s age and vocal development – so for the most part that is classical music and light music theatre.
SPORT
Sport to enjoy, sport for all and a great choice of sports; that’s part of life at Twyford. Enjoyment, teamwork and good grace are our pillars. Enthusiasm, honesty and always giving your best are the centre of our sport ethos and each pave the way to create supportive and successful teams at every level. We have many high level achievers as is reflected in the number of children that gain county positions, in often more than one sport, and who also are awarded Sports Scholarships to their senior schools (over last 10 years at least 2, and a maximum of 9 sports awards are won every year to senior schools). However, most, if not all, of the less sporty children, share in the enjoyment and satisfaction that sport promotes at every level.
LIFE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
The children go on many engaging educational trips during the year and welcome to Twyford visiting groups who captivatingly bring themes and topics to life. The list of trips is extensive and diverse, ranging from Reception visiting the local Pizza Express to make pizzas, performances at the local theatres (Winchester’s Theatre Royal, Southampton’s Mayflower), Marwell Zoo, Hillier Gardens, Royal Victoria Country Park, the Meon Valley Outdoor Sustainability Centre, Marwell Activity Centre, Southampton Art Gallery. The highlight for many in the Summer is ‘Beach Week’, when each year group visits Avon Beach, Mudeford for the day to explore the seashore, go crabbing and build their water confidence and safety awareness.
Selection Criteria: Selective
With that comes the freedom to let children be children within the context of high achievement. In this sense, based on my experience, Twyford School is the Prep School against which other Prep Schools (at least in the context of the UK system) should be measured
Pre-Prep
Reception, Year 1, Year 2: £4,116
Prep
Year 3: £6,115
Years 4-8: £7,331
BURSARIES
The Governors of Twyford School are committed to broadening access to the School by offering eligible parents means-tested financial support with the payment of fees. Such support, known as a Bursary, and made at the discretion of the Governors, may be awarded in the form of a discount on tuition and other fees payable, depending on the financial, compassionate or other pertinent circumstances of applicants.
