The Pilgrims School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 4 to 13 (Gender - 4 to 13 )

At Pilgrims', being a boys-only school, they don’t need to worry about gender stereotypes and there are opportunities abound: from physics to music, drama to rugby, knitting to ecology, fives to chess and so much more.In the awe-inspiring setting of ancient-listed buildings nestled between Winchester Cathedral and Winchester College, you won’t find a ‘typical’ Pilgrims’ boy. In small classes with teachers who are subject specialists, Pilgrims’ is a place of outstanding personalised learning and teaching. They maximise the progress of every boy across our broad curriculum, co-curriculum, and extra-curriculum.

Facilities

Pre-Prep
Starting school is exciting! Little boys join us on their first day, ready to explore the world and discover its wonders. These first steps in to school life are so important, and the Reception class is deliberately small to ensure a gentle transition from home or nursery to full time education.

Reception
The experienced Early Years teachers and full time teaching assistants, take great care to help your son feel at home, and they set aside lots of time at the start and end of each day to let you know how well he is doing.  In no time at all, your son will be settled in, making friends and growing in confidence with each passing day. Following the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, they place a strong emphasis on learning through play, with a particular focus on outdoor learning - they are a recognised Forest School with an accredited Forest School Leader.

Year 1 and Year 2
In Years 1 and 2, the curriculum and routines reflect the emerging maturity and independence of the boys. Cross-curricular learning encourages lateral-thinking and the use of wider knowledge. A history lesson studying transport, space or electricity may cover scientific or geographical content. An English lesson may use historical figures as its focus for creative writing. Teaching is built around topic-based contexts for learning, that enthuse our boys – dinosaurs, pirates, space and castles are always popular themes!

Features

Things to note

Art
They spacious art studio is a buzzing environment, devoted to creativity and to nurturing each boy’s imagination. Each boy is given a sketchbook and takes lessons in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. They learn to improve their skills by being positive critics of each other’s work and ideas. The Cathedral Close, right outside the school, is crammed with beautiful architectural features and an abundance of green spaces, and is often used as an inspiration for projects.

Music
Music at The Pilgrims’ School is an exceptional strength. It informs so much of all that they do during our school day, and it resonates even with the Pilgrims who do not sing or play. They inspire an understanding and appreciation of music in every boy, which he will find invaluable for the rest of his life. Not surprisingly, there are more instrumental lessons each week than there are boys in the school. A dedicated team of 28 specialist VMTs (visiting music teachers) teaches the full range of orchestral instruments, in addition to piano, organ, guitar, lute and voice.  Music lessons are arranged on a rota basis so that disruption to lessons is kept to a minimum, ensuring that we preserve the balance of academics, sport and music (and free time!) for each boy.

Admission Details

The main points for entry to the school are Reception (4+), Years 3 and 4 (8+/9+). Boys sometimes join other year groups, and at various times in the year, subject to places being available. A good number of boys regularly join them in the senior years (11+). This is usually for preparation relative to scholarships and the ISEB and Common Entrance examinations, for boarding experience, and for specialist preparation for Winchester College’s own entry examination.
